Right i have an old DVD player i dug up yesterday a Tosh sd-3109

So i thought i would test some DVD-R on it
Anyway none worked,Ritek dye ect
So i had a Brain wave i took the top off the Tosh and put a Real DVD R2 in
When the Dvd starts at VTS-01 i swaped it for a DVD-R Guess what it played it ok
This proves the RF on the DVD-r is ok for the machine

What is this DvD player looking for?
Does the Disc have to have a name on it
I burn using Nero drag and Drop
Yes it has a Audio_VTS
Or Btw i have china DVD disc (if u know what i mean ) that plays ok as well on the Machine

Older DVD players mistook the lower reflectivity of a DVD-R/RW as the second layer of a stamped DVD.

Is this only as it reads the TOC of the disc?

There should be a firmware update for you drive to fix DVD-R reading.

Seems that new player are DVD-R compatible or not.

A friend bought a pioneer (cannot remember which one) which was not advertised as DVD-R compatible, and there was another version, about 150 euros more expensive, that is advertiseed DVD-R compatible but with no other extra feature.

Guess what ?

The non-dvdR just refuse to play any DVDR : Message on the screen : "This DVD cannot be played in this player", a bit like you try to put a R1 DVD in a R2 player...

And... of course he went back to the shop and changed it for the upper model, and ?? yes, of course, dvdr worked.

He did not test a pioneer DVDR as he did not have.. too bad.

It seems that player look at the DVD and just deny access to it if a DVDR is detected. We know how it happend when a player don't like a DVDR, you heard seeking, tou have the beginning of the trailer or menu, then pixelisation and error etc... Not just a single message like you put a wrong zone DVD.

Seems ability to play DVDR is an extra service you have to pay.

I will ask for precise ref of the 2 players and edit back the post.
