I use DVDMaestro to author my discs, and it always displays the first subtitle stream by default. I actually like subs so this didn't bother me for a long time, but I figured it was time I learned how to get around this. I couldn't find a way to override it from DVDMaestro itself, so I started looking around for other solutions.
From various posts it seemed that ppl are creating discs that default to subtitles-off by setting the subpicture stream to 62. Stream 62 cannot exist, so no subtitles are displayed.
This method works, but when I play the disc back on my Apex player and hit the "Subtitle" button on my remote, my TV displays "SUBTITLE OFF." From this I'm guessing that a subtitle stream is playing until I hit that button, albeit a nonexistant one. To truly have a disc that defaults to subtitles-off, the TV should display "SUBTITLE 01/01: ENGLISH" the first time you press the "Subtitle" button on your remote. (Assuming you have one subtitle stream on your disc) The second press of the button should get the TV to display "SUBTITLE OFF," and turn the subs off. This is most shrinkwrap DVD titles are authored, and I want to do the same.
I looked at the IFOs of a few titles, and most of them include this line:
(SetStn)Set Subpicture Stream: 0(Off) [51 00 00 00 80 00 00 00]
I mastered another disc using this setting, and it works like I want it to -- "SUBTITLE 01/01: ENGLISH" on the first tap of the "Subtitle" button on my remote. The stream-62 method works, but I get the impression that it's a bit of a hack? Have others tried setting the subpic stream to 0 / off? I'm kind of confused because this seems like a really obvious solution, and I'm wondering why I haven't read any posts describing it.
For the record, here's what I did:
1. Compile from DVDMaestro 2.9
2. Open VTS_01_0.IFO with IFOEdit 0.94
3. Click on VTS_PGCITI, click on the "plus" box that appears, click on VTS_PGC_1, scroll down to PGC Command Table
4. DVDMaestro* pre-inserts NOPs as the first 5 pre-commands. Right-click on the first one, select Edit
5. Select "(SetSTN) Set Subpicture Stream Nr" and "0" from the dropdown menus
6. Your edited line should look like this:
(SetStn)Set Subpicture Stream: 0(Off) [51 00 00 00 80 00 00 00]
7. Save VTS_01_0.IFO
8. Click on "VTS Sectors"
*If you're not using DVDMaestro, you might not see any NOPs here, but I think you can add one by right-clicking on the PGC Command Table and selecting "Add Pre-Command" from the menu.
