hello every 1, here's my problem... 3 months ago i bought 100 sentinel dvd-r discs. i found out that dispite i can only write @1X they work well with no coasters. I ran out of those discs and bought some more, but here's where the problem starts... i'm getting coasters on 50% of the movies, recorded 8 so far. the first discs had some writings near the hole in the center, but these new discs don't have anything so i think the discs are diferent.
i'm using a dru-500a with the original firmware. I am a little upset, because these discs are the cheapest i can find here ( Portugal ), didn't want to change to DVD+R because they cost twice as much, even though i can record them @2.5X with nero with sucess, no problems, coasters, frozen frames...

so after all this talk... what do you guys think i should do???
and how do i use advdinfo???? the text comes out is HEX i think!!!!

pop a bland DVD-R into your recorder.

run dvd decrypter, and set it to mode/iso/write and it should give you the manufacturer id there.

i'll also try a firmware upgrade.
the latest is 2.0e if i'm not mistaken...
has any of you guys tried that version yet???

okay.... i've up'ed the firmware and get the same shit!!! coasters in the end!!!!
and guess what... when i try to read manufacturer info (of the sentinel discs) in DVD decrypter, the field is empty, and the first sentinel discs i had were identified as "DVD-R DDD"
i testing new brands now, i've tested MMORE, (this batch is diferent from the my first one, i say that because the markings on the disc are diferent) and it worked just fine! i'm also going to test SPEER which acording to DVD decrypter are, just like these last MMORE, made by vivastar... i don't really know it it's any good, but if it works... who gives a damn, right???
i'll come back soon with some more results...

My god, if they're being made by vivastar that's your problem right there.

Serriously i would'nt be paying more than $0.05 for vivastar discs. From the ones I've used only the first GB was defect free, from then on it whent to shit.

I had once discs which were crappy even for Vivastars: Power Calibration Error!

@ gooki... maybe that explains why the recording process is aborted after 10 minutes or so!!

i tested the SPEER discs. the first one i tried to record using NERO + the files (not ISO) i got an error.
then i tried a MMORE it also got an error at 98% !!! i tried again to record on the SPEER discs this time using an ISO done with IMGtools 0.89 ... so far i've recorded two with no coasters. but theres one strange thing about this. even though i selected 2X for burning speed, it still takes an hour to complete the recording.

i really miss the old sentinel discs!!! they were cheap and above all reliable, coaster free.
can you tell me which brands are best for the DRU-500A ???
i'll also be searching here in the forum for the info...

From my understanding the prodisc technologies g02 discs work well with the sony dru500a, additionally they also write at 2x speed and are cheap.

Ritek G03 and G04's work well.

Serriously though, anything is better than vivastar even princo.

thanks for the advice gooki. i decided not to use MMORE. i only got a 50% yield!!! that sucks!!

tell me... are those riteks sold and labeled as Ritek, or is it just like the MMORE (vivastar) stuff ????

@ Destemido,
what´s the price on that Sentinels discs?I got them at 2€, but i don´t like them very much. You can get Ritek G03 at aprox. 1.8 € each or 2€ total delivery to our Country ( Portugal ). I only use Riteks.
Ritek is the company that makes them, usually they come out with another brand writed on them!!! You can use Advinfo to see the brand of dvd you use. Pop a dvd blanck on your Sony Dru-500, open advinfo and choose OE and read structure!!!
95% of my dvds are Riteks and i´m very glade with them.
Até à próxima.

I'm sorry so many forum members are having such difficulty with their media, it's a horrible feeling to produce coasters, and it's even worse when you think you have asuccessful burn, but then discover (sometimes days later) that your film will not play the last 20minutes without jumping and severe pixellation. Like many other members, I rapidly arrived at the conclusion that there is really no substitute for buying high quality media.

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50111

I feel it is a false economy to argue that one cannot afford to buy Riteks, because by the time you've bought Princos or Vivastars etc, and only got a 50% yield, you've wasted time and money, will have to buy more disks anyway, and, therefore, might just as well have paid the premium to begin with.

I honestly DO understand that not everyone can afford to pay $2 per disk, but as I said above...

Hi destemido!

Why did you come back to Sentinel and did you solve the reported problems you had with them?

i don't have any problems now!! recorded more than 50 and only one reported as not being good to record and wouldn't allow me to start the recording process.
these, according to DVD Decrypter are OPTODISK001 brand, or something like that!
