Offset line?? How to use it??

Hi,
i don't know which value to set into offset line in the video setting.
If i have an avi with upper field first which value
do i have to set into offset line??
With the previous versions it was much easier! there was
the upper field option!

Please let me know

EDIT: It looks like I could have gotten alot of this backwards, but the last paragraph is still true. It's odd because checking Upper Field First in 2.5 would shift the video 1 line, yet flag it TopField First according to bitrate viewer.



Upper Field First (checked) = Offset Line (1)
Upper Field First (unchecked) = Offset Line (0)

It has long been known that all CCE does when you check Upper Field First is shift the video down one line so that top field became the bottom field and vice versa, then encoded the video as normal with the field order set to bottom field first, as it always does. All the new option does is make this more apparent. I don't know why they wouldn't make it a check box or two mutually exclusive radio buttons, since you shouldn't need to use a value other than 0 or 1, but at least the new name makes it clear what is going on.

Of course, this option has no effect on progressive video, other than shifting the video, as field order does not matter. Also, if you mess it up and select the wrong field order (or offset) when you encode, you can always use Pulldown.exe to change the field order flags in the stream to EVEN (since CCE always outputs ODD field order, as described above)

Check the pdf file of CCE BASIC version.

You can find :

"This parameter specifies offset lines from which encoding starts. If the
source is top field first, specify 0 or even number, otherwise, specify 1 or add number. For example, if the source is DV, specify 1. If this setting is incorrect, the movement of a encoded video will be jerky.
This setting is valid only in MPEG-2 encoding mode."

you can also change mpeg files with the wrong field made in CCE, using Re-Stream. Just untick the "top field first" flag and re-save the file. Then just reburn to DVD and without having to actually re-process the mpeg2 compression, all is well. Thank god i found this method!! i fell into the same trap when going from 2.66 to 2.67.

See CCE FAQ Q10 and Q11. Also I don't think you can "fix" the video after activating "Upper Field First"/setting "Offset Line" to 1 by using ReStream/Pulldown because this resulted in a spatial change in the field order which can't be undone by flipping the temporal field order.

hey RB,

well thats a very technical sounding reason why it shouldnt work, but all i know is that i burned a dvdr with the file and got stuttering with obvious field order problems, used restream byt unticking the box and saving, then reburned and now the new dvdr is perfect. Beats me. U should try it.

Well, did you have "Upper Field First" checked (or Offset Line set to 1) in CCE during encoding? If not, then you can use ReStream/Pulldown to change the field order, no question.

ya that was the whole problem...moving from 2.66 to 2.67, i missed the new "offset" thing. So i have about 20-30 mpeg2 files that i processed wrong.

Now if i could only figure out easily on my hard drive which files of mine are set wrong with the field order and which ones are from 2.66 and correct...other than burning EVERYTHING to dvdr and testing on a TV first, its not obvious to me how.... :(

You could make a .d2v from your .mpv file and then open it in TMPGenc and check if the field order is correct.

I posted how to do it recently so I'll just cut-n-paste from that post:

Here's an easy way to tell for any video TMPGenc can open. Open TMPGenc and load up your video. Click on the settings button and select the advanced tab. Notice what is in the field order box (that's the default, it doesn't know). To see if that is correct double click the Deinterlace filter and pick one of the Even-Odd methods from the dropdown box. Find a scene with good movement using the scroll bar and using your right arrow key play the video. If the field order is correct it will look fine, if it's wrong the video will stutter. Switch the Field Order and see how it affects the deinterlace.


Just open a .mpv that you know was encoded correctly (not one changed by restream/pulldown) and see what field order it is. Then check your other videos to see if they look correct when you select that field order. If it looks wrong you know that video didn't have the right line offset applied and you can reverse the field order.

using the wizard mode of TMPGENC, it will search thru the frames and tell you what field order the file is.
