GeForce nVidia 40.72 Driver Unstable?

I recently upgraded my graphics drivers with the most recent WHQL-certified Windows 2000 driver for my VisionTek GeForce TI4600. Prior to the upgrade (in which I uninstalled the old driver, rebooted and installed the new driver), my system could render for days without any error whatsoever.
Since the 40.72 driver has been active, I had to crank my system bus from 136mhz to 133mhz just to get Premiere 6.5 to render even a short portion of the timeline.
Caligari trueSpace (at 133mhz) can't render more than 90 frames of animation before 'fatal rendering error'.

What I am interested in knowing is if there is a widespread instability issue with 40.72? I had none of these problems until I upgraded. The blurb about this driver is it's 25% faster than earlier versions. That makes me think it's doing something to push the memory timings.

What other version beyond 28.32 is considered ultra-stable? Should I go back to 28.32, or can someone recommend a higher version that is completely stable?

Although I've never had any trouble with the earlier drivers, you might try the more recent WHQL Candidate (not Certified) 41.09 Drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_41.09) and see if they fix your problems.

I installed 41.09 this morning and Premiere seems to be more stable, but Caligari trueSpace crashed with a fatal render error at frame 289 of a 1920 on the first trial and on frame 130 on the second attempt. That's a tad better than on frame 90, as I got with the WHQL-certified driver, but not good enough to get any production done unfortunately.
I'll roll back to 28.32 until something stable comes along.

You also may try 30.82 which are also WHQL certified. These drivers have proven very stable on my Athlon XP / Win2K / WinXP setup. My graphics card is a Geforce 2 MX (old one so).
