Fastest sharpen filter

Hi, just wondering what sharpen filter to use that would not decrease encoded speed too much? I use AVISYNTH 2.08 also.

asharp is fast too, and probably better for compressibility.

That depends a lot on the source. I use extra sharpening quite rarely, I do a sharp bicubic resizing if I need to sharpen, but maybe values from 20 to 40 will bring enough sharpness without making it much less compressible. Do some tests and you'll get the idea;)

i use unfilter in all my encodes!

using
unfilter(10,10) or
unfilter(5,5)(very gentle way)
before Bicubic,
you got gentle sharpness.

is faster and clean!

I use Bicubic 0.6 since it's generally recommended as the highest value. If I want to have even more sharpening, I switch to Lanczos. But like I said, all depends on the source. On a TV capture material, Bicubic is needed to get sharpening whereas a DVD source should look good with a Bilinear IMO. Then again, Bilinear reduces the analog noise by softening the image:rolleyes:

Bilinear compresses a lot better than a sharp bicubic so the length of the movie affects my choice as well every time:)

I've noticed that my DVD player (or TV) sharpens the output so the result is sharper looking on the TV than on the PC display.

I also think that quant 3 does have a little blurring effect so my preview is always a little sharper then what I want as a final

Warp is nice and has it locations
and Unfilter works well for me also
I have also used the two of them combined

I think I'm going to go with MSharpen, it's defaults are abit high for DVD but once I decrease abit all looks good :) fast, doesn't add noise and looks very good.
