What is the relationship between the mds and iso file

I know that MDS has the same relation to an ISO that a CUE has to a BIN...or at least that's what I've been told. But I tried to mount the ISO image of a file without the MDS and it seemed to work fine.
(A friend of mine was on the computer and deleted it because he thought it was something else, so I had little choice but to try the ISO alone).

I was just curious as to how the MDS/ISO thing works.

Funny you should mention this, minutes before I read this page I thought the same thing. So I too would like to know the answer :)

I know that One item of information it holds is the MultiLayer info in DVD9. With out it programs like DVD Decrypter only seem to be able to access the first layer.

The MDS file is used when people rip to several files.
People using NTFS wont really have any need for the MDS file as they only have a single huge ISO. People using FAT/FAT32 are limited to files of 4GB in size - therefore most dvds are split into 2 or more files. ISO, I01, I02 etc.

For that kinda thing, the MDS file is required if you intend to mount the image in DAEMON Tools. If you just tried to mount the ISO, it will fall over the second it tried to read something that was contained in the I01 or I02 file.
