Rurouni Kenshin on Cartoon Network

My favorite anime is going to air on Cartoon Network, tomorrow, March 17, 2002!

I am not sure if its going to be dubbed or subbed, but most likely dubbed. If you like it though, be sure to hold out for the box set coming out sometime this year (with Japanese Subtitles). It should be much less expensive that buying all 24 DVDs separately (over $500). Oh and don't buy those rip-offs from Ebay, I hear quality stinks, besides the moral issue.

The english dub of Kenshin is extraordinary! Bang Zoom did a great job on it, probably the best english dub I know of! Still not quite as good as the oro-gozaruna japanese dub of course ;)

Wondering how CN will handle a violent show like this though :rolleyes:

In my opinion the dubs sucked for Kenshin the voices didn't match up right.. Especially Kenshin.. And i already have all the 24 dvd's.. Though how many have seen the new oav's that going to be released? its Sad. won't put any spoilers though.. But the only bad thing about this is like RadicalEd said.. there is going to be alot of people that think they know Kenshin when all they have seen is the Cartoon Network one.. uggghhh

And some of the rip offs (aka HK DVD's) are really pretty good.. well more they are R1 rips.. but yes some other can really suck.. though its good if there isn't anything in the states for the anime yet..

Big sweeping edits. 3/4ths of the footage will be dropped. Leaving a combined total of 10 episodes of nothing but solid oro oro oro oro or ara ara ara however you like it.

Warning the following is a rant on a tangent. Read at your own discretion. I am not exactly sure how I got off on it. Well lets say it was just one of those days. I will probably cool off change my mind and come back to delete it in 15 min so read it while you can.

Seeing the butchering that was done on the very first episode of Inu Yasha it really gives you confidence. They have grown bored with keeping children safe from overt sexuality while allowing gratuitous violence(and in the case of DBZ several guys staring eachother down for hours while looking constipated) now they have to keep us safe from niples in any context. Lookie mommy the centepede lady has nipples. I am going to grow up to be a maladjusted pervert. Not. Granted there should be a context where content like that should be editied. But it is a sad state when it is taken to the extreme that children are censored from looking at and understanding the great sculptures and paintings of the past. Or even having some pictures published in encyclopedias. Hell even religeous artwork depicts naked men and wemon in a non sexual context and kids are shielded from that. I guess that is why the leave and encourage basic violence and angst in every segment of society. You need an outlet when you are being repressed. I mean after all who wants well adjusted inteligent citizens when you could have apathetic whiny self absorbed ones who kill eachother off to keep overcrowding down. Working part time in retail with electronics we show a few movies. And if some mothers and passerbys had their way we would be allowed to play nothing but Barney or Telletubbies(Pending on how many believe Jerry Fallwel that the purple one is gay because it carries a hand bag.). Someone put in Power Rangers but a parent claimed that it was to violent and that she did not want her 14 year old son to see such things. You would not believe the complaints we got about Disney movies. And did you know the original Men In Black is filled with gratuitous foul language? Yes that's right folks at one point in the movie, under his breath, Will Smiths character almost inaudiably says the word "shit". The lady could catch you coughing a 4 letter word 20 feet away in a torrential thunderstorm with hurricane winds!

A little off the cartoon network topic- how many of you think that Rurouni Kenshin is the best anime you've ever seen? I mean this without any exageration- I've seen tons of anime, and none come even close to Kenshin (well, at least the Kyoto arc). The best pacing in terms of the continuing story, with characters that develop over the episodes, with ZERO filler (again, not counting half the first season and EVERYTHING that came after the Kyoto arc). I imagine many people already forgot how truly great and unique this anime is, so I think overall that the cartoon network thing is alright, since this anime deserves any attention it gets.

It all depends on your tastes. I like Kenshin sure. But Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemi lately have had me totaly floored. And in terms of plot and character development with them there is none. Total random senseless violence and social sattire with gratuitous fan shots. :D KAWAII! :P Don't try to explain it you'll go mad.

All i can say is Excel Saga is jacked up.. But every person will have there own comments. I personally like Kenshin because i like those style of times people came from. But there are many other awesome ones that people love for there own reasons.. and btw Neo Neko your prior post is soo true.. America has gotten really pathetic which shielding there children. Good parenting is not keeping everything away from there kid its teaching them about it and how they need to not do it. etc..

Also back ot kenshin i think from what i read somewhere they are doing very little editing to it because of some new Terms or something that they don't have to. god i wish i could find the link about it.

Even those bootlegs that are ripped from the R1 DVDs are bad: sound often not in synch, subtitles often disappear wa~y too fast, video was reencoded to 4,x Mbit/s CBR...

Yes they are less then R1's but well they are cheap and they often at least show what isn't availiable in R1's.. Also when you have wathced like 3rd generation fansub tapes and vcd's then well they are great quality.. I do have some HK but i replace them with R1's when they get to America.. Cause gotta have top quality.

Excel Saga i have the first 2 dvd's i don't think i will be getting anymore of it.. From what i heard they had to replace the voice actor because she lost her voice from screaming too much. lol.

Well, to be fair, you can make the argument that you like certain anime better than Kenshin (personally, Excel Saga doesn't do it for me, except for the parts where they make fun of Cowboy Bebop- anything that makes fun of Cowboy Bebop should be praised). So I'll at least adjust my statement and say that hands down, Rurouni Kenshin is the best action anime ever, which is saying a lot since I would estimate over 50% of anime falls into that category. As an action anime, I would say it delivers the best fight scenes ever, because not only were they well animated, but they were very well thought out and maintained the viewer's interest without dragging it out over 50 episodes (DBZ). And as an action anime, it delivers more interesting characters than any other by a great margin. From what I've seen, there have been countless ripoffs, but nothing in recent memory comes even close to matching Kenshin's quality. Sorry for going on and on, but to me, RK is the standard by which I judge all other anime.

Oh, @iwod, the difference between a sub and a dub is that a sub means original japanese voice actors with english subtitles, whereas a dub means english voices. If at all possible, always watched a subtitled version of an anime, you wouldn't possibly believe how much better it is. I'm not even talking about bad dubs, which there are many- the Princess Mononoke dub was very well done, but I didn't think much of the movie until I saw the subtitled version, which came out almost as a completely different movie. Strange but true.

Well one episode down and no major cartoon network rape. But then the first episode was not that violent etc.

Oh and while Excel Saga makes fun of Cowboy BeBop, It also makes fun of Dragon Ball Z, Fansubs, Macros, Robotech, Power Rangers, Captain Harlock, RPGs, Doujin, Galaxy Express 999, Sex/Violence/Rock n' Roll, every film genera known to man, good, evil. No one is safe from excel saga!

I like bebop! don't knock it! anyways, I've seen a few eps of kenshin a while back.. never had the time to get into it though. maybe I'll go by that DVD set when it comes out.

Sorry for knocking on Cowboy Bebop, but I honestly believe it has done anime in general a great injustice...I realize that my tastes differ greatly from most other anime fans (ie I don't think Excel Saga is hilarious), but I feel Cowboy Bebop puts style over substance to the nth degree. I'm not saying it's the worst anime I've ever seen (although I personally dislike it), but what bothers me is how damn near EVERYONE thinks it is the greatest anime they have ever seen. As far as Kenshin goes, let me say that roughly half of the first season were good, the other half were filler and to me were pretty bad. Nevertheless you should watch it and move on to the Kyoto arc- these episodes are of the finest quality, I've yet to see better. If you start watching these episodes, I guarantee you will not want to stop watching until you are through, period. But please remember- if you are intending on buying the dvds, DO NOT buy any past the Kyoto arc (ends at around episode 50 or so)- it's complete and utter trash (I could tell you why, but this post is getting long enough as it is...)

I think Cowboy Bebop is a pretty good anime also.. Not the best i have seen.. But i think it ranks up there also. Other good action ones that i think are great on par with kenshin is stuff like Slayers, Ranma 1/2 if you are more into action / comedy.

The problem with kenshin even though the kyoto arc is soo good is that they tried getting everything they could outta it on tv. Hence why all the shitty filler.. which where never wrote by the original author. just thrown in there to add time.. Plus after the Kyoto Arc things well go down hill like qwerpoi said.. I would recommend watching up to episode 61 thats where it ends.. and only if you are a die hard fan and wanna watch every bit of it then continue on.. other wise you might have a little distaste in your mouth.. of course this is just IMHO.

Cowboy Bebop is one of the "worse" animes IMHO. The only interesting thing in it is Miss Valentine :D

I agree with your attitude in general, it's difficult to trust anyone's opinions but your own. However, I will say this particular case is different- if you plan on buying the DVDs, I HIGHLY recommend that you only buy up to the end of the Kyoto arc, then rent any dvds that come afterwards. Schultz pretty much describes it well- the producers of the series were simply trying to stall after the Kyoto arc, because they were waiting for the manga artist to finish his next story arc before animating it. The quality of the story and the artwork are of a completely different caliber for these filler episodes, I don't even consider it to be of the same series. Anyway, I only offer this advice because I can't imagine the hundreds of dollars people wasted on the 4 or 5 dvds that came after the Kyoto arc, not knowing this information.

Thank you for sharing your opinion on Cowboy Bebop, a breath of fresh air to realize I am not alone. Keep in mind I have nothing against the animation (which is well done), or the overall characters (who are likeable). What I despise is the fact that everyone claims the series has a really "deep" story, when in fact the story was terrible. I'm sorry, but that is a fact, not an opinion- if you watch anime for style, CB is right for you, but the story is the worst I have seen, in the sense that it tricks viewers into thinking that there is some great backdrop and history behind the anime. Think long and hard about the story (Spike's past, the "mystery" of Julia, the war on Titan, etc.) and you will realize that there is nothing to think about. Simply by throwing in random flashbacks that reveal nothing and are never explained makes people think it's a fantastic story. And Vicious? The absolute worst villian ever- it's a character someone in grade school would come up with! Let's make a guy, who has no real personality, but betrays a lot of people! First we'll make up a character for him to betray named Lin! What, Lin's dead? Ok, in the later episode, we'll make up ANOTHER character for Vicious to betray, Lin's brother, Shin! People are going to really care that these two characters who were in the story for about 5 minutes die! Ummm, anyway, I'll stop now before I get too offensive, and I apologize to those true fans of Cowboy Bebop- just don't come up to me and praise the story, or I'll go off again (and nobody wants that).
