I need to eliminate ringing artifacts at sharp borders in animated source. The original file - MPEG1 (VCD). I want to clean it and reincode into DiVX. If such VirtualDub filters don't exist, help with Avisynth filters (and appropriate script) would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

There are lots of different filters on Donald Graft's (http://shelob.mordor.net/dgraft/) site. For your purposes you might try the Optimized 2D Cleaner (http://shelob.mordor.net/dgraft/2dcleaner.html), and flaXen Cartoon Filter (http://shelob.mordor.net/dgraft/flaxen/flaxen.html). They should get rid of the artifacts, and strengthen the border lines.
If you are wanting AviSynth scripting filters, your general script would look like this:
DirectShowSource("Movie.mpg", 29.97)
Then after that in the script you will want to add the filters. I would suggest that you search around on the forum. There are LOTS of threads asking about filters.

*Edit* Also take a look at the AviSynth Manual (http://avisynth.org/index.php?page=AviSynthManual).

It looks like Optimized 2D Cleaner does the particular job the best. Thanks, TelemachusMH.

although 2d cleaner (optimized) is pretty decent, may i also suggest warp-sharp filter (by avry-lee, the creator of vdub). has EXTREMELY nice results for anime clips.
cheers

as do SmartSmootherHiQ, Deen, and c3d.
I'd think SSHQ would do the best job in this case, although it tends to be incredibly slow.
