Subtitles, DivX 5.02, GKnot 0.26b

Not having much luck today.

I'm trying to encode 'Sum of All fears' to 1400mb w/ AC3 and english subs. I've extracted the vobs, and the subtitles .idx and .sub file, and want to include only the english subs which would appear in the english soundtrack film (ie the parts in foreign language). I'm trying to have these 'burnt in' to the .avi, as I've no call to ever turn them off.

I've tried to set up GKnot to do it, using VobSub in the subtitles tab, opened the .sub file and chose the right stream (14 in this case), then checked the subtitles box in the save and encode dialogue, preview shows the subs as I wanted them.

Problem is this: at the end of the first pass, GKnot reports it couldn't open the log file, and complains that the number of counted frames doesn't match (or something to that effect). I closed it in anger before thinking to inspect the error messages properly, and have now set it going again and overwritten the log files.

This is the first movie I've tried to encode with subs - am I overlooking something basic here?

If you can scroll around your .avs alright (as you seem to have done already), then the codec failure is not due to lack of input video.

Other reasons that you can quickly check:

DivX 5.02 not installed or not installed properly. Check it by starting Vdub, then use the Video...Compression command and see if it is in the list of codecs there.

Bad video input resolution. Your _Gknot.log file would have told us if this was the problem ... Without it, just look at the video resolution from your .avs (just look at the resizing filter). If you didn't change the default (Mod32/Mod16) on the Resolution tab, this shouldn't be your problem.

Out of disk space (it happens).

Overclocking (excessive heat produced by the CPU can cause a Vdub crash).

Thanks! Bizarrely that's spot on, DivX apparently badly installed?

It's worked fine for ages, but removing and replacing it (from the same installer package I originally installed it) has fixed it.
