Low Resolution/Bitrate Divx encode guide?

i did a search and couldnt really find what i needed, all that it brought up was low res divx to vcd,

i was wondering if there were any guides on how to create a half decent quality low bitrate divx movie from dvd source to 320x240 res ish,

Well, I'm not going to ask you why you would do this, ... but I suggest you use the Gordian Knot guide.

The just follow the guide, and where you have to choose the resolution, take your 320*???.
Also adjust the bitrate to a value that is low enough. (choose the "calculate filesize" option on the upper left.)

Then look at the bytes*pixel/frame on the lower right, and make sure the value is between the values found in the guide. (Same goes for the Compressibility Test.)

The values in the guides are good rules-of-thumb, but I think they're not for "low" bitrates. (it doesn't scale so lineairly), so you'll have to play around to find the best settings.

And maybe for those low bitrates, you could try some other codecs. I think Windows Media 9 is better at low bitrates, but for high bitrates I'd definately go for DivX.

the point is, for my stepsisters dreamcast, it can only play low res divx and she doesnt have dvd player, so i wanna make movies so she can watch em on it

Given parameters gives DivX5Pro encoded movie with about 2Mb per minute. You can do resize with your prefered tool.

Quality is of course far from DVD but it's ok for non-achivale prupose and to watch on a regular TV.
