The reference you refer to, while very compehensive, is somewhat dated, nearly 2yrs to be precise.

Please don't take this as being "picky"

But......

Any chance of an update, or do you stand by your original judgement (I know I would, not wishing to put words into your mouth)

DVD Decrypter rules! I originally used Smart Ripper and it worked fine. The big difference is DVD Decrypter is a "living" product and Lightning continually updates and adds features to the product in addition to providing excellent support both on Doom9 and his own forum.

I have not done a recent comparison of the two products but I recollect that the two were pretty similar a year or so ago. Since that time the added features in DVD Decrypter have made it much richer than Smart Ripper.

I've tried smartripper, vstrip and DVD decrypter.

Vstrip = too archaic
smartripper = some DVDs have bad frames when ripped. dunno know why
DVD decrypter = the bad frames that occurs in smartripper are gone

My choice is DVD decrypter. Eagerly awaiting for the next version. :)

I think what you guys say is right.

I have used Smartripper from the start, and found it easy to use. It very rairly lets me down (I have put problems downto "dodgy disc")

Trouble is I'm so used to it now, I'm very loath to change.

I know DVDDecrypter is a "living" programme, but the "how to crack the encryption bit" was solved ages ago. I feel some changes being made these days are a bit cosmetic, and are also covered by other more dedicated packages.

Now, if someone says it rips faster, then I would be far more inclined to think about changing.

The DVDs that had ripping errors has no scratch. I tried ripping it with smartripper like 5 times and still have errors in them.

DVD decrypter ripped it perfectly the first time.

Let me say the change from Smartripper to DVD decrypter is not so bad as DVD decrypter has an intuitive interface and and you only have to setup the options once. Lightning UK is going to release a version where the demux options are saved just like smartripper. I requested it. :)

Also if you looked at Doom9's review (the link on top), DVD Decrypter rips faster.

I hadn't spotted the speed difference (about 4%).

But it goes to the heart of the matter. That review is 2 yrs old, so I'm questioning wether it's conclusions still hold good today. I know there have been no changes to Smartripper for some considerable time, but DVDDecrypter has had quite a number. I just wondered if this had any impact on performance.

I'm sure there will be a need to upgrade my ripper one day, and it will have to be DVD Decrypter, but if I do it sooner, I want to feel that I'm doing it for some real benefit, and I have to say, a 4% speed improvement isn't what I call a "driving force"

You know at the start of the ripping process where Smartripper may spend 5-100 seconds searching for the correct key? In DVDDecrypter this isn't even noticeble. So in addition to those 4% you'll save several seconds! :p

(I suspect most people are already aware of this, take it as a FYI to those who've never tried DVDDecrypter yet)

I do know what you mean. I must admit, most of the time this is fairly short, but some DVDs do have hige VOB lists.

Thanks for the opinions. I tried Smart Ripper for the first time and it did not reconize my ASPI layer. Hummm DVD Decrypter has no problem here. From what I read I'll stick with DVD Decrypter. Lighting UK and the United Kingdom rocks!

I've used Smartripper v 2.34 for a long time, and other than crashing or losing its marbles, it works fine. A reboot usually fixes the problem. However, v 2.41 suffers from a bug which 2.34 does not have. Try the Darkwolf dvd and attempt to rip the movie in titleset 1. The newer version, v 2.41, screws up and truncates several chapters at the beginning. I wound up with a coaster as a result of this. The older version, v 2.34, does not have this problem, nor does the version of dvd decrypter that precedes v 3.1.6.0.

On one dvd, I had a problem feeding dvd decrypter output to Instant Copy, so no decryption program is perfect. The only suggestion I can make is to test, test, test, before burning. Sometimes you get lazy and run on autopilot, having done so many rips in the past.

ever thought of looking up the r1 release of matrix? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/dvd/B00000K19E/tech-info/104-8430488-6339954 answers your question regarding the disc type. And my drive at the time was a Toshiba SDM-1212 12x DVD-ROM.

I'm using Smartripper now and have tried DVDecrypter in the past, but I found at that time it didn't create a chapter file, which I use for input in Oggmux. Is this already possible?

Yeah, it makes some ogg chapter info file. Cant remember what its for exactly!

It is for chapter info so you can skip into chapters within the video.
