Except for K-frames Vdm does not indicate the frame type for Xvid movies. Is this a problem of Vdm or of the Xvid.dll?

It's a problem of Video for Windows. B-frames are handled internally by XviD and DivX, because the VfW interface only states whether a frame is a key frame or a dependant (non-key) frame.
However, I've heard that this limitation is being examined by the VirtualDubMod developers, so you may see B-frame detection in a future version of the mod.

If you have access to the xvid stats file used to create the avi you can load that and it will show the frame type reported there.

... matroska has a special field for frame types, IIRC we can indicate/differentiate 16 different frame types. Of course, this field is NOT being used in VfW compatibility mode, only I/P fames have to be marked. When encoding a movie directly into matroska, and using the MPEG4 'native' modes, you could set this flag correctly when reading some codec output, but this is not supported by VfW again, so you had to hack XviD.dll into Vdub using dynamical or statical linking.
So, in case you want to transmux an AVI with b-frames into matroska and you want to convert it into a video stream being in 'native' mode, you need a decoder so you can tell what type is every frame ....
In principal, you could 'abuse' matroska's frame type field even for streams written in AVI/VfW compatibility mode, if you make a simple app reading the stats file and setting the flag accordingly, even after the encoding is finished ..

This is going to be my dumbest question ever:
(How) can I load a stats file into vdm? :stupid:

Who asked anyone about matroska ?
The only reference to what version of virtualdub is "vdm" (being virtualdubmod), and not "matroskadub". So your post is pretty much useless.
