i'm trying to compress "barbarella queen of the galaxy" and something strange is going on: about halfway 'till the end of the movie interlacing-artifacts are present, while in the first half there aren't. I've checked high motion scenes etc in the first half, but there really is no interlacing whatsoever.
What's the best way to proveed now? should i deinterlace the whole thing?

If you haven't seen it all ready, click on this sticky thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34718), which will take you to the deinterlace/IVTC tutorial.

I don't know if your source is NTSC or PAL.

If NTSC, I'd examine one of those scenes that show artifacts to see if Telecining is present or not. If not, I'd use Field Deinterlace on the entire content. If it is Telecining, I'd go back to scenes in the area where artifacts aren't obvious, and see if there is any indication of Telecining, such as duplicate frames or fields, then either IVTC or Deinterlace. (SeparateFields is a wonderful tool for examining individual fields .. and one can use SelectEven and/or SelectOdd as well, if non-sequential fields need to be examined.)

If PAL, I'd try to determine how the content was created, using Hakko's Good/Bad/Ugly triage...and proceed appropriately.

try telecide(guide=2,post=false) as deinterlacer.
