Hi

I have converted a couple of XVid files to DVD fairly succesfully, but the process takes so long and I am wondering if I am doing it in the best way.

Ok, so first I am stripping the audio to a WAV file with VirtualDub then loading both into TMPGEnc. Most the source files I use have Frame rates of 23.967, so I am selecting NTSC DVD (Is this correct?). I am then having to set the Audio to MPEG 1 Audio layer II in order for TMPGEnc to start rendering and Stream type and System (video and audio). On the Highest Quality an average movie is taking 12 hours to encode. I'm then running it through ULead DVD Studio to output the VIDEO_TS files to burn to DVD.

Though this has worked well with a 25fps XVid, I am wondering if this is the best way to go about it. None of the guides I have found make any reference to this Stream Type or Audio mode and often state that the process should be much quicker (My PC is 2100+ with 512 DDR Ram).

Can anyone who has succesfuly converted AVI to DVD give me thier thoughts or suggestions.

Cheers

Stewart

I have used the exact same process to create DVDs. I find Xvid takes almost 2x as long to convert compared with a similar Divx 5.0.2 movie. Using Divx to decode the vid made no difference. I have no explanation for this. I am using a 2.4 ghz p4 with 1ghz ddr. I had Lord of the rings in Xvid and Divx 5.0.2 and compared the 2 in encoding time and final quality. The Xvid is less lossy to convert to DVD. Mabe the greater detail in the xvid version takes longer to encode. D2V files which should have even more detail though take less time than divx or xvid.
It sounds like you are doing this correctly. Make sure the video type is "film" at the bottom of the page in which you load the files. Otherwise you may get a choppy playing file. I encode a 2h movie in divx in 5-8 h, xvid is 10-15h, and d2v is 4-7h. All are using highest quality without noise reduction and color precision on 10.
