VIDEO_TS Hacking
SO, I am doing the usual Episode DVD rip. Rip by Vob ID, put them in the correct viewing order (rename/change VOB ID's), create new IFO, then spin up DVD2one, BAMMO, 20 min later...Done.
Ya,Ya, I know the whole quality issue..whatever, this leads me to the IFOedit topic. There always seams to be this small 9-20 Mb space left on the disk. So, I am thinking, Hmmm, could I squeeze a cheesy menu in there after DVD2One is done, without having to re-Author it? (the reason I just didnt include the 500Mb menu is that these episodes are about 3 hrs total time, so space was alloted for video.)
Shazame! Lets do some hacking with IFOedit.
My first thought was to simply add a titleset to the disk, grab a frame of video from the episode menu, convert it to M2v, mux it with dummy audio in IFOedit, make it Titleset 2, start editing the Video_TS.ifo, add the Titleset, make the First Play PGC titleset 2 (have it loop on this frame for 5 secs), then with a Post command have it start Titleset 1. Well, sounds simple....but all the DVD navigation rules...Jump to TitleSetManager...Bla, bla, bla. What a pain. So, how about this hack...
Take the Soprano's, or any HB0 Multiepisode DVD, what IFOedit is great at is the editing of the First Play PGC, we normally have it jump past that stupid FBI warning and studio logo garbage (all contained within the VIDEO_TS.VOB - actually 3 seperate VOB ID's)..but, what if we hack that, make the FBI warning a still image of the names of the episodes on the disk, and the logo I turned into a small Soprano intro. Then IFOedit the MenuPGC to play these normally, but change the PostCommand to JUMP TO TITLESET 1 (That DVD2ONE created). (VTS_01_01.VOB)
Now, when I put in a multiEpisode DVD backup (Movie only) this is how it runs..
1. Screen shows - Names of episodes -(ripped from menu) (5 secs) (timer increments)
2. Screen shows - Soprano Moving menu -(ripped from menu) (10 Sec) (timer increments)
3. Screen shows - Episode 1 begins (timer resets to 0) (next chapter button on remote advances to the next episode.)
The whole menu hack is 7Mb, all within the VIDEO_TS.VOB, all modifications to the VIDEO_TS.IFO done with IFOedit/Vobedit.
Another reason I did this is because my DVD player doesnt support the JACKET_P option, so showing the episodes using the 'Stop'/Jacket feature on the DVD is useless. So, just to give you all another option to doing your Movie only backups, you can jam a intro menu (No active buttons) in there to give you any info you want. If there is a huge interest in this perhaps a guide is in order, but if your in this forum, you get the idea.
