I'm trying to playback some DiVX5.03 encoded AVI's but using either ffdshow or using ffdshow with DiVX5.03 and Xvid to playback enabled I get smeared video (Like purple garbage on white credits scrolling on a black background).
I thought htis would have been solved by now. DiVX5.03 has been out for a while so what's the prob?

As far as I know it's the qpel feature of DivX5.0.3.
The only decoder that decodes them 'properly' is the DivXDecoder of that version. So maybe it's not ISO compatible,...

Divx5 detects if a video was encoded with 5.00-5.02 or with 5.03, and interpolates to decode correctly. Unfortunately, it thinks that XviD is 5.02 :( . But the good news is that we (probably) already know what to do to make it think it's 5.03 . I wonder why it's not fixed yet.

I think its because we were deliberating what version number to pass to the DivX decoder, either 5.03 or a very high number so we dont have to worry about it with every version of DivX.
I think the 5.03 version number passing is the safest for now.
edit:
or maybe its not that easy to get divx to do it perfectly ? :

Sounds complicated. I thought it would not be such a hassle :)
