CCE Basic and 3:2 pull down question?

I bought the CCE Basic. Trying to re-encode NTSC DVD called The Ring. Had a real hard time with interlacing artifacts on scenes in motion, I tried every possible combination of settings until I flagged the 3:2 pulldown and it got rid of the interlacing artifacts problem, but I end up with jerky frames after trying both remux and authoring new DVD. I can't find much info about it, and it's not in the guides. The CCE manual says it's for converting 24fps film to 30fps NTSC video, but I thought my source was 30fps NTSC video already. Can anybody please tell me if 3:2 pulldown should be flagged for re-encoding an NTSC DVD 720x480 Progressive source.

Any clue why I'm getting the jerky frames? I'm using dvd2avi to create a .d2v project, dvd2avi says my source is 16.9 29.970fps progressive 95% film, but ifoedit says its 720x480 NTSC 525/60 16.9 letterboxed, I used VFAPI to frameserve CCE. I'm trying to do a 2 pass vbr, mpeg2, elementary stream, DVD compliant, Progressive frame, GOP sequence is correct at m=3 n/m=4, I've tried offset line at 0,1,2 Block scan at zigzag and alternate. I've tried at least 10 times, 10 different ways and they all come out with those horizontal streaks on scenes in motion.

What's going wrong?

Thanks, that got me a little further along, but it only plays on my PC. I re-authored with IfoEdit and the DVD plays back fine on my PC without any jerky frames or synch problems. But it won't play on my Pioneer set-top player. Does the Inverse 3:2 pulldown in CCE function, or is it a pacifier? Or am I missunderstanding it's use. I thought it is a feature which does the pulldown on the m2v after decoding to flag it back to 29.97 fps.

If it's working on the PC but not the standalone then try making a image first and then burn it using record now or imgtools.

If you used forced film in DVD2avi then you now have a progressive stream which will play fine on your PC but before it will play fine on your standalone you have to use pulldown to set the flags back to 29.97 The newest CCE has pulldown but in order for it to work the input has to be 29.97 which yours isnt as you have used force film (23.97). I've used CCEs pulldown for hybrid video and from other reports thats probably the best way of using it. Your original problem was probably because your field order was incorrect (you probably checked upper field first) this seems to be a no no with CCE. However you are better off quality wise using forcefilm for 95% film and then running it through pulldown.exe afterwards. I use the gui version so cant help you on the commandline but its mentioned many times in these forums...do some searches.

Thanks Andykard. I started over frameserving the source at 29.97 and checked off inverse 3:2 pulldown in CCE. Works great on the PC. I tried this originally but thought I had a problem because IFO Edit dosn't preview this method of encoding. It still crashes on the set-top. The first chapter plays fine, second chapter and beyond all crash. The pulldown.exe didn't work as well, it brought back the interlaced frames in motion which I was trying to get rid of.

I think it is an authoring problem, I'm trying to use IFO Edit to re-author this DVD. What software are you using to author DVD's?

I use Maestro to author and have also used SpruveUp when I was more of a beginner. I have never had any problems with either program. When you have finished creating the d2v with DVD2AVI does it tell you the movie is greater than 95% film? in which case you should use force film and pulldown after CCE (get the gui version and check off 29.97, progressive frames and drop frame true - only those 3 options). If it is less than 95% film, then keep at 29.97 and check pulldown in CCE (as this means it is a hybrid - film + NTSC) and the latest CCE does a good job of hybrids. Then author with maestro or spruceup and I dont think you will have any problems

Yup, the problem was the authoring software. Got my hands on DVDMAESTRO, worked great. Plays on PC and Set-top with the CCE pulldown method. Just have to figure out how to get the subtitle stream into assets. It dosn't like a .SUP file demuxed from source by VOBEDIT. Can you offer any help? Thanks.

Get the latest version of subrip and export for DVDMaestro in bmp format 720x480. Then import into Maestro from the subtitle track (has Abc on it). I've had problems with them going a little out of sync by the end but lots written about that in these forums.
