Best way to split dvd when movie can fit on one dvd

I have been backing up most of my dvds onto 2 discs. Normally most of the movie goes onto one disc with the remaining part of the movie and extra features going to another disc. Earlier I was getting ready to split a movie and ifoedit didn’t choose a place for splitting the movie. I assume that this meant the movie was small enough to fit onto one disc. What would be the best way to get the main movie onto one disc and the features onto another? I guess I could choose a place to split the movie but that would seem like a waste if the movie in fact could all fit onto one disc.

What would happen if I didn’t choose a place to split and choose to split anyway? Would it put all the movie into the disc1 folder and nothing in the disc2 folder? I’m not at my computer now so I can’t do any testing till later

That's a good question. I haven't tested this yet, but I thought about trying the split disc in ifoedit, with the splitting point at the end of the movie. Then adding all the extras to disc 2. I don't know if it works, but it sounds like it should, and ifoedit should copy the menu to disc2 for you already as well.
If you don't choose a destination I think ifoedit puts the files in C:\.

Hey beginnerdan, I just tested it on Cats & Dogs and it worked, the whole movie fit on one disc, along with the menu! You strip it though, only with the vobids for the movie (that's what I did anyway. if you leave the extras it may come out too big with the extras.)Yee Haw!
Update: I got the error with Nero though. Maybe it will burn ok with imgtools and dvd decryptor. I wonder why it's giving the error...
update: I made the img with imgtools and loaded it in daemon tools and windvd loaded it right up. Will burn it now to confirm.

Update: Success! Plays fine in the standalone!

Strange...what error did you get? Reallocation? Or missing file?

I didn't get a chance to experiment with the method last night.

I was too busy trying to get rid of the pan and scan version and keep widescreen. I couldn't locate the screen where you choose widescreen and fullscreen so I couldn't strip that screen out. I ran all the id's through VOBrator but I could not find the dang screen. When I play the dvd through ifoedit, after title 1 plays it proceeds to the screen I am looking for. I guess I could still delete the VTSs associated with the fullscreen and just remember not to ever choose fullscreen in the menu. 2COOL posted in another post about how to find all the pre/post command places referring to the title containing the fullscreen version and change it to refer to the title with the widescreen version. I tried that once but it didn't seem to work so I may try again. The movie is THE ONE. If anyone has sucefully done this movie, please let me know what you did.

I got the file reallocation error with Nero. Not sure why, I removed 1 end sector off disc 1 too.

Actually, I have backed up The One, movie only. There are 2 sets of files, one full screen and the other widescreen. Strip out the movie in the files of the widescreen. Doom9 has an excellent guide on backing up the main movie only, check out their website.

Hmm...interesting...I assume you ran a 'Get VTS Sectors'? That's the only other thing I could think of...

I think I did, I try to do that every time. I may have skipped it on accident though, you never know.

Just an update on that cats & dogs movie, it worked, but the credits got cut off. I chose the last chapter on there, but it must make the split point before that chapter. Not a big deal, nor do I see away around it.

I got THE ONE backed up using the movie only w/ ifoedit. I tried doing Me, Myself and Irene and the first disc wouldn't play. Sometimes I don't know if I have done something wrong or whether the disc is bad ( I would guess that I just did something worng). I guess I should write to an RW disc first.

Test the movie with WinDVD first and save yoiurself the time. Choose Source, DVD from folder, and choose the VIDEO_TS folder. If the movie isn't in one you need to make a folder and put it in there.
Also, for movies that can fit on one disc when choosing only 1 version of a 2 version movie check this out, look for the post on Toy Story 2.

Thanks for the tips Josh. Last night I actually burned Me, Myself & Irene onto two dvd-rws. They both played using PowerDVD but with one little hangup. When you chose play from the menu on disc 1, the movie appeared to hangup but if I clicked play on the remote the movie would continue on. I figured this would work with my stand alone but I was wrong. I have no idea what is wrong so now I am going to try to do movie only w/ no menus. If that doesn't work, then to hell with backing this one up.
