View Full Version : why isn't there 1 official release from the Xvid developers?

Well we have Nic, Koepi and umaniac releasing their own builds. Why can't Xvid have 1 official binary release?
I didn't mean to offend the developer but I was wondering about that when I first tried Xvid.
I looked for info in xvid.org and came up blank. I looked at the FAW and the info is not there.
I searched this forum and came up blank. It's possible I didn't think of the proper search criteria.
Any ideas? Thanks :)

It's quite simple really. XviD is an educational project. As long as they only release source code they do not have to pay license fees to the MPEG-LA.

Maybe it's better to keep 3 Xvid versions. They have the same source, but they could differ in many things. So every "developer" can make its own experiments.
Will you join together when Xvid 1.0 will be ready (creating 1 only build)?
- this is just a question. Everybody works like it wants :o

I dont understand this fascination with the number 1.0 ?? Do people think things will suddenly run completely stable and amazingly better just because this number is given to a build? But, of course, I understand your point.
For me, however, the stable builds hold no interest to me as only new shiny crazy things interest me :) so once 1.0 comes out ill be releasing dev-api-5 builds instead (or whatever we're upto by then) ;) rather than the boring stable 1.0 build ;)
Cheers,

What's the use of having several binary distributors if their binaries are identical :p. And xvid-stable is boring :D.

Just a thought on this reply.
Aren't Koepi, Nic and umaniac liable to license fess to MPEG-LA as these 3 releases binaries of an MPEG compatible codec?

Sorry unless your trying to stir trouble, im loosing the point of this thread, and ive had enough of discussions about licensing on this forum.
No offense, im sure your just asking an honest question, but im going to close the thread to stop speculation.
