I've been looking around but can't really find an exact answer. My friend ripped a dvd of his in the SVCD format and it came out to like 1.4 gigs. I ripped a dvd of mine to the same size using divx 5.0.3. So I'm getting a moving the same size he is. So what's the differance? I'd like to know a little more about this.

DivX is Mpeg-4, usually in an AVI container (but it can also be in some of the other new, non-traditional containers, .mp4, .ogm, .rm, .asf, etc.) Mpeg-4 was originally developed with the intention of equivalent image quality in lower bandwidth environments, such as Digital Television, the Internet, etc. Mpeg-4 was also developed with DRM in mind to protect content owner's rights. To the end user, Mpeg-4 was supposed to mean an extension of interaction with video (this has yet to happen).
SVCD is Mpeg-2. SVCD is an extension of the original VCD standard. SVCD was backed strongly by Philips in its beginning days, and found strong roots in Asia. SVCD is limited to a resolution of 480 pixels by 480 pixels (players may play other resolutions, but the original published specification only allowed 480x480). SVCD bitrate is also limited (because of the maxiumum transfer rate of a CD, etc.). SVCD is contained within a field based format, allowing it to natively deal with interlaced content. The original SVCD specification also contained conventions for menus, removable subtitle streams, and multiple audio streams (2 stereo streams or 1 5.1 stream, in a special format that never really took off).
The main advantage of SVCD vs DivX is that it is much easier to find a standalone DVD Player on the market that will play SVCD. DivX players used to be non-existant, and the ones that exist now are few and far between (for now). Many people also prefer the look of Mpeg-2 over Mpeg-4 because of the perception of the over-quant effect Mpeg-4 can have (most notably on the color black).

the thing is though which has better quality. I mean we are bothing ripping our movies at the same size. So wouldn't his look better? And can divx dvd players play any kind of divx? I mean wouldn't there be some set standard because of the codecs required to play them and also the amount of CPU power needed?

...the thing is though which has better quality. I mean we are bothing ripping our movies at the same size....Probably not. SVCD video streams are 480x480 or 480x576, with a maximum bitrate of 2520 kbps. SVCDs also use MP2 audio.
(There are some variations, check out the specifications at www.vcdhelp.com.)
Unless your DivX encodes have the same resolution and bitrates, you are trying to compare apples with diving boards.

In most 2-pass divx/xvid encodes you won't need the same bitrate as a comparable SVCD.
Divx/xvid offers higher quality at lower bitrates. The main advantage is the compression of divx and hence, smaller file size.

What jggimi is saying is true, but generally, a DivX rip will look better than any equivalent SVCD with the same size.

ok so what about the divx dvd players? can they play any kinda of divx? Also i have never seen a divx disk for a divx player. Since they did professionally sell them did people actually legally rip disk in a certain format? Did they use divs 3.11 or something like that? Would be kinda cool if to find out.. If you get my drift.

A little searching, ToiletDuck, would give you the answers you seek.
