Hallo everyone!

Does somebody know if Premiere 6.5 support .ac3 files?

Thanks! Bye.

Deborah!

Hi Deborah! Yes, Premiere can read ac3 files and also m2v (you need a mpeg-2 plug-in). But you can't export ac3 sound.
The programs which support ac3 and video on timeline are:

steinberg nuendo with ac3 plug-in
sonic foundry vegas

Thanks Slig for your interest!

Is it possible with the programs "steimberg" and "sonic" to load m2v and ac3 files? And to work with them (adding titles, mixing files, ... as you can do with Premiere)?

Bye! Deborah!

Use a prog like HEADAC3 to decompress your Ac3 track to .wav. Then do all you’re editing, transitions and such with your video file and .wav file. Use Premiere to export the timeline, Premiere will export your audio separately to a .wav file, you can then load this .wav file in *Sonic Foundry Soft Encode- Dolby Digital 5.1* to encode the .wav to AC3.

I have just done this procedure with a VHS 2 DVD transfer that worked beautifully…no sync issues and pure AC3 2.0 sound!!!

Good luck!

Stenberg Nuendo:

It's an audio editor with rich capabilities. It can work directly with ac3 sound. You can load m2v file into this program (if you have mpg or something of that kind - rename it to m2v) and if this m2v file has ac3 sound - the program splits it to a few audio track. You can fix audio sync there and also apply different sound effects. The program provides timeline where you can see individual frames like in premiere. But it works with SOUND!!!

Sonic Foundry Vegas - video editor, which also understands m2v and ac3. I think it can satisfy you. You can also fix audio sync problems there.

Sonic foundry soft encode - can decode ac3 sound files in separate *.wav audio tracks. Then you can encode it back into *.ac3.

HeadAC3he - if you used chopper xp you will probably get corrupt ac3 headers. The problem you may encounter is that can't import this file into audio/video editor or the dvd authoring program. To fix it you should open the file with HeadAC3he (indicate in the Source field), then in the Target field indicate "source". Then click "start". A few seconds and all is done!

Good luck!

I still havn't found enough time to test Vegas, but you can read about it's key features here:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/reviewersguides/vegasvideo3/reviewersguide.pdf

it's about vegas 3, and here's vegas 4:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/Products/vegas4.pdf

Look throught these guides, maybe you will get the answers faster than I will answer you.

As far as I understood you can also create titles in vegas.

All I can say now is that people choose vegas to fix audio sync problems - it's very comfortable for that purpose.

Good luck! If you'll try this product - tell me what you think of it -i'm also interested, but don't have enough time, you know...

Deborah! I have tried Vegas at last, and found it quite interesting.
First of all: it doesn't accept ac3 files, but can make ac3. So if you need to open ac3 file in vegas - you have to take a program like sonic foundry soft encode and split ac3 file into separate mono tracks, then import them into vegas and then you can make ac3 from inside the program. Actually it's the only product on the market that combines video and audio editor with ac3 support. I spent yesterday's evening testing vegas - all i can say - you will have to read the manual, 'cause it's internal structure (e.g. work area) differs from premiere. It has also transitions (some of them differ from premiere), video effects and title creator. Also vegas is integrated with dvd architect - a dvd-building software, quite simple for the beginner, but of course it has limited abilities in comparsion with scenarist.

That's what I can say from the first glance. Deborah?

Slig,

as usual thanks a lot for you interest! It seems quite complicated but I'd like to test that sw!

Maybe one day there will be a women-friendly sw for ac3 editing!!!

Bye! Deborah.
