Hi .. hoping someone could help

DivX 503
Virtualdub 1.4.13 (build 14328/release) by Avery Lee
Just installed DivX 5.0.3 and I am trying to compress a .mpg file - No audio.
I went o video- compression, selected divX Pro 5.0.3 Codec
Imultipass, nth pass
encoding bitrate = 768
bitrate modulation = constant quality
update log file
read MV file

max keyframe interval = 150
scene change threshold = 50%
performance = slowest
bi directional encoding

quick config CLI
-bvn1 768 -psy 1 -key 150 -log "c:\divx.log" -w -mv "c:\mvinfo.bin" -p -b -sc 50 -pq 5 -profile 2

all worked fine and well my problem started when i tried to do the nth pass

settings are pretty much the same
multipass, nth pass
encoding bitrate = 768
bitrate modulation = constant quality
update log file
read MV file

max keyframe interval = 150
scene change threshold = 50%
performance = slowest
bi directional encoding

quick config CLI
-bvnn 768 -psy 1 -key 150 -log "c:\divx.log" -w -mv "c:\mvinfo.bin" -p -b -pq 5 -vbv 768000,1048576,786432 -profile 2

Wheni clicked on save avi i got this dialog box that says
Planning Strategy
Q = 5.oooooo
Q = 4.oooooo
Q = 3.oooooo
Q = 2.oooooo
and it is still going (probably for about close to an hour)
can someone please tell me if divX 503 always does this ... is there something i did wrong ... can it be a compatibility

issue with virtualdab ....
please help

thanks for any help / insight in advance

you have to select Multipass, 1st pass first.
Once that finishes, you can go back and change it to Nth pass.

sorry for not being clear ... but i did the first pass and that worked very well i had my problem in the 2nd pass .... by the way .. it just finnished ... saomething like 6 hours while the first pass took a grand tottal of 25 min.

you better use original 2-pass

you say better use original 2nd pass ... well i have no problem with that but let me ask you ... i switched to divx 502 and gordianknot so that i would be able to take advantage of the nth pass like three times or so .. wanted to see the results ... is there something wrong with my configuration , a problem with my install (was a fresh install ... uninstalled 502 first) or is there something else that can be going wrong
thanks fro all the help so far :)

That's weird. Whenever I do an encode that dialog box with 'Planning Strategy' is only up for a split second. And whilst the first pass does take less time than the second 25 mins to 6 hours does seem an awful lot.

i could imagine the problem lies here
-vbv 768000,1057486,786432

with my encodes it more looks like
-vbv 16000000,1835008,1376256

note that in mine (1)=max bitrate >>> (2)=dunno > (3)=target bitrate

where in yours (1) < (2) > (3)
and (3) > (1)
-> target > max bitrate might be a bit diffucult to achieve

well im not deep into the matter and it might well be i'm wrong, but i just noted i have never seen the 1st number that small

thanks for your response .. at least i know know what those # meen ...
wiell i was trying to encode it to one cd 720 MB which i guess would equall something like 738280 and none of those numbers add up

i really dont know any more
i guess the best thing to do would be to try again
i'll do that and see hwat happens

well i tried doing it agai with the same video and it still gave me that "Planning Strategy" thing so i played around with the compresser and got it to work the way it always had ... this is what i did just incase any body else has this problem maybe this can help

i unchecked choose my profile but left everythng else at the same and it worked great ... thanks for the suggestions though ...
