View Full Version : Dv1 = 2

Hi,

When I open an avi capped from my Sony DV camcorder, I get the message "DV1 has video and audio interleaved. VD cannot open DV1 files, so will only open the video part" (well, thats the gist of it).

I have downloaded a DV1-2 converter but it makes a mess of the audio (out of sync very badly and there is an intermittent hissing sound). Is there any way to get VD to open a DV1 file with the audio still intact?

No, VirtualDub is a VFW software and can not access the audio in an Avi Type-1 file.
Here's why (from Microsoft: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/directx9_c/directx/htm/type1vstype2dvfiles.asp)

"Type-1 vs. Type-2 DV AVI Files
DV cameras produce interleaved audio-video; each frame of video also contains the audio information. If you save DV data to an AVI file, you have a choice:
·Store the interleaved data as one stream in the AVI file. This is known as a type-1 file.
·Split the interleaved data into separate audio and video streams. This is known as a type-2 file.
For video capture, where maximum throughput is crucial, it is better to use a type-1 file, because type-2 files carry redundant audio data. (The video stream still has the audio data. The audio is simply hidden by labeling the stream as video.) Also, writing a type-2 file requires some additional processor time to split the interleaved stream.
On the other hand, type-1 files are less efficient for real-time editing. The application must extract the audio from the interleaved stream, make the edits, and interleave the data again. Also, the type-1 format is not compatible with Microsoft® Video for Windows® (VFW). DirectShow can handle both types of files. "

You can do two things: either convert the Type-1 file to Type-2, or I assume this is possible: open the Type-1 file in a software that understands Type-1 and from it, export the audio as wav. Then start VirtualDub, open your file and point out the wav file under "audio" in VirtualDub.

Hope that helps

Hi Maria,

Thanks for that. I have been splitting the file, editing with VD and then rejoining them. Its just a pain and it would make life easier if I could do the editing without the splitting. Do you now of any software (apart from DV Converter) which can convert DV1 to DV2?

Best solution: capture Type-2. Check out the DV forum, and at the top, the sticky. Download DVIO to capture Type-2 DV footage.

Canopus has a free Type-1 to Type-2 DV converter on their web site. I think our own moderator BB hasn't had much luck with it, but if you want to try it it's at http://www.canopus.com/US/products/DV_file_converter/pm_dv_file_converter.asp
I can't make out if it converts from Type-1 Avi to Type-2 Avi or if it only converts to and from Type-1 to Canopus's DV format.

There's also a shareware that I have tested briefly and which did a good job. It's called aDVanced DV File Converter and a demo can be downloaded here: http://www.dvunlimited.com/

PureMotion also has a demo of their software EditStudio (with a plug-in for conversion) here:
http://www.puremotion.com/editstudio/manual/plugins/tools/dvtypeconvertor/index.htm

If you test these, please post which one worked the best.
Take a backup of your files before testing it.

The best thing for you would be to capture in Type-2 OpenDML instead of Type-1. That's what I do and the files are easily edited in VirtualDub. What software do you use for capturing?
Vegas Video 3 and Scenalyzer Live both capture in Type-2 OpenDML. Vegas seems to only use Type-2 OpenDML, in Scenalyzer Live you can choose between many DV formats.

Hi,

I'm downloading as we speak. I'll let you know how I get on.

The fact that I was able to convert with DVD Converter, suggests I need to defrag the HD, which I will do. I'll let you know if that works.

I use either Adobe Premiere6 or VideoWave 5SE for capturing. I find most of the other software I have (i.e. VideoStudio6) drops too many frames. With AP6 I don't get ANY dropped frames, and with VW5 I get about 11 dropped frames per hour at worst.

Hi,

OK, so far Canopus converter is working perfectly, fast and clean. The others I haven't ried, mainly because they sticka watermark in the corner.

I have just downloaded Ulead DV converter and I'll report back after I've tried it.

Pinnacle Studio 8 also captures as type 2.
I think that the XP-bundled Windows Movie Maker will do it as well.

@steve_g
Thanks for the info!
Didn't know about Studio 8.
The tests I have done have given me the following results:

These apps capture Type 1 *only*:
Ulead VideoStudio 6
Ulead MediaStudio 6.5
Ulead DVD Workshop 1.3
Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2
Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro 2.5

Can capture both Type-1 and Type-2:
Scenalyzer Live

These apps capture Type-2 OpenDML
Adobe Premiere 6.5
Vegas Video 3
And now I can add Pinncle Studio 8 to this list.

at the risk of diversifying this thread, is it clear what decides whether type 1 or type 2 .avi's are captured?
My reason for asking:

I capture from my Canon DV camera via a standard 1394 port. I can capture with Pinnacle studio 8, or Windows Movie Maker (WMM), and always get a type 2.

A friend captures from a Sony camera into WMM and gets type 1

Neither of us can get Vdub capture to work (to test).

Is it the capturte software that influences this, or the Codecs installed or even the camera?

Since this thread kinda evolved more and more away from a vdub issue I moved it to DV.

DVapp is another program that can capture type 1 or type 2 DV avi files:

It's the capturing software that decides what type of file it writes to to the hard drive (Type-1 or Type-2).

VirtualDub can't handle Firewire devices, it needs a VFW driver to be able to capture from a device.
From http://www.virtualdub.org/docs_capture:
VirtualDub needs a Video for Windows capture driver to capture. Most Firewire (DV) devices do not provide a VFW driver, and thus cannot be used by VirtualDub at all.

Swan,
then it looks like WMM version 1.2 captures type 2, whereas version 2 captures type 1.
To be confirmed.....

hope this helps your list!
