View Full Version : D2S wants to write to my DVDROM drive!
josiba

Ok. Maybe I'm just dumb, but why on earth does D2S keeps on asking me for free space on drive F when my drive F is a DVD drive?
I am getting the message box "There is no disc on unit. Insert a disc on unit F:" for every step D2S has to write to hard drive...
I have set exactly where I want my files to be saved (all of them to D: partition); I don't delete any temporary files during conversion and I always rip to HD before encoding.
I don't know how D2S works and why does it search for 2 different partitions all the time. My temporary files directory is set to c:\temp so if any temp directory would be needed it should be that one, right?
All was going more or less fine until I had to do some repartitioning and new OS installation - I always do that when WinXP is getting sluggish.
My drive letters are somewhat different now, but I don't know why D2S doesn't like it this way...
C: - OS and programms partition (including Dvd2Svcd)
D: - video editing partition, where I store all temporary and final video and audio files, this is where I have most of hard drive space.
E: - cdrw drive
F: - dvdrom drive
G: - downloads partition - just for er... downloads
My guess is D2S looks for 2 consecutive partitions, starting at the one it saves its files, but in my case it can't find it, because after D: there is a cdrw (E:) and a dvd (F:).
When I chose CANCEL at the message box looking for free space on drive F: (dvdrom drive) D2S keeps going until the next time it has to write something to hard drive... Rather annoying, don't you agree?
Here's a part of the log file, where it looks for free space on D: and F:

Regarding your articles title, I would recommend a mental hospital near you.
Regarding the content, can you please post a complete log file?

Ok, I admit the subject was a little vague... But I don't really need that hospital, at least not for now :)
As for the complete log file, I had to stay in front of the computer for as long the ripping and encoding process was going just to get that log file, because D2S is asking for free space on a non-writable drive everytime it has to write something... I had no give up.
The point is, why is it necessary to check for free space on 2 different partitions? Like in:
- 09-03-2003 16:05:59
- Free on drive D: 20882.17 mb
- Free on drive F: 0.00 mb
- Internal rip
Btw, I am changing the subject from "I'm going insane" to "D2S wants to write to my DVDROM drive!". Is it better? ;)

jorel I really think you took the response in a way that it wasn't intended. I saw it as simply having a little fun.
Notice the smiley face and that the original title did say "I am going insane".
I don't understand the rest of the message though. If you have a problem then PM me, but if I read it right then there was a problem, but it was worked out? Is this correct?
The title was poor and thus changed to a much better one.
Let's just leave this is a misunderstanding due to language. I really think that is all it is.
Now back to the issue at hand.
Did you use the default output setting on the misc tab to set the directory structure?

There is a rule for aggressive answers to a member that would be rule (4) but it is pretty obvious and straight forward the rules and even with bad english or whatever your finding of an excuse for him is. Getting pissy about it makes you just as wrong in my eye's not only that but your asking for support in making ux-3 look bad, shame on you...

Damn-The Chainsaw's back. Good to see you here again. Stick around and visit more often. We miss you, man.
Jorel just didn't understand ux-3's intent. ux-3 was just goofing around. No harm done. I think we should cut jorel some slack until his English improves a bit more. His heart was in the right place, even if his words weren't. :)
I've had that problem before where Windows arbitrarily reassigns the partition letters after an OS reinstall, and it can be a pain to get straight. If I'm not mistaken, Partition Magic has a way to fix that. You tell it what the old drive letter was, and what the new one is, and it runs through and changes them all. But if markrb's suggestion doesn't work, maybe just reinstall D2S.

i can see manono, you are a great programmer, knows everything about systems, but fright someone that have different vision.
for me you are like windows in problems:
Windows sometimes is arbitrary!
see, your suggestion to other masters is to use the force, not arguments!
what is this master,a gang?
please i'm not flamed! in my vision i'm simply having a little fun, like markrb post here!
how do you feel it? understand me or the "thing are going worse"?

Hi-
I have no idea what you just said, jorel. I was sticking up for you, but I think I got slammed for my efforts. But that's OK. No hard feelings. We love you, man. :) Sorry to be off topic.

@jorel yeah i can see you have a silly way about you, so i'll take it as such.......we need more of that tho the language difference does cause confusions, its nothing people can't work out.
@manono i "hear" you have been really busy helping others and giving your time around here, i'm sure alot of users are thankful for that so keep up the good work:))))))
It is funny you leave doom9 for other projects and some how i get dragged in again hehehe, i guess having friends here kinda pulls a person back you can learn from others tho as i'm not the only mod who has moved on and still re visted doom9...
@josiba i haven't seen the problem myself with dvd2svcd so thats probably why this thread is off topic as it is:D i will give a few pointers if you are already doing things correct ignore my comments, i've seen windows 98 se and xp mess up a bit if you are using virtual drives not that you are, as you haven't posted this but i have seen this happen where the operating system gets confused and doesn't know which drive is what. If that was the case, which it might or might not be then dvd2svcd could be getting fooled in to thinking that your dvddrive is a hardrive and is full ect... but as ux-3 stated posting a complete log file would answer some of my questions and others... have you tried a different version of dvd2svcd? if not try that see if it helps.....

@Bach I know you are smart enough to know there are ways around this.
Nobody would have any problem if the poster tried to post in English and then said in case I got it wrong here it is in X language and if somebody could translate for me. This way if nobody is able to translate then at least we can try and figure out what is being asked.
Or you could always try to help behind the scenes. Which I know isn't as effecient since it limits the number of people that can help with the translation.
@Chainsaw glad to see you back. I went to that site you sent me to, but it's a bit beyond what I do now.

@mark thanks man it is always nice to be around friends, and really doom9 is like any great site you make good friends and thats a fact.....the language thing i agree with that you can get around it if you make attempts like you said.......i really dont know much more to say tho on this problem the full log file might help i guess we can wait and see:)
"@Chainsaw glad to see you back. I went to that site you sent me to, but it's a bit beyond what I do now."
Well i have taken the great team work and helping standards that i have learned from my fellow mods and users at doom9 and used that knowledge for my other interests which has helped everyone out i believe:) c-ya

Did you go to "misc" and set a default directory? Because you might just have one path pointing to some place that is on CD, which you never checked. A complete log file would help!

Ok. First of all I wish to thank everyone who tried to help me. After all, as someone sugested (thank you too for that) what I did was a fresh installation (not on top the previous, I erased completely the old one) and guess what? All is working perfectly now. DVD2SVCD doesn't search anymore for free space on my DVDROM drive... I don't have a writable DVD drive yet, though I was about to believe that my brand new Liteon DVDRom drive was in fact a DVD-R... yeah right, keep dreaming ;)
So, case closed, it was a simple problem after all.
One last note: please don't get angry with each other because of someone not being able to express correctly in plain english; I myself don't speak/write that well, I'm aware of that, but I can understand when someone is just kidding, and I understood that this was the case with UX-3. Thank you JOREL for defending me, but it really wasn't necessary ;)
Ok, back to work now. Long live DVD2SVCD, it STILL is the best!

Hi to all!
Rarely do I get to visit with so many of the members and friends that have influenced me and helped me so much. This has certainly been an unexpected surprise this morning.
@Josiba - Manono's suggestion of a simple uninstall/reinstall is one that has saved me from several hair-pulling frenzies; I've seen it suggested as a regular maintainence procedure and keep a program disc nearby for speedy fixes in situations just such as this. Don't we always try to make things harder than they really are?
@Chainsaw - You are missed. I know your new responsibilities keep you very busy, but please come back and visit us more often.
@jorel - Hello again, old friend! I've been speaking the English language for........well, let's just say a long time now, and I still have huge problems transmitting emotion with the written word. Many times, what seems to be a perfectly sensible and even spoken response, will undergo a startling transformation before reaching Doom9's server. Your heart is huge, you are welcome at my house anytime. Take me up on it someday.

a new rule to chainsaw135:
the new law:
chainsaw135,you are missed.came back to doom9 forum,
you are breaking the rule # ??????????? !
just kidding!
:p
chainsaw135,everybody here needs your friendship and your wise!
don't do it no more or you break the "new law"!
@ josiba
in the final, the ux-3 hint seem perfect:
"Did you go to "misc" and set a default directory?"
