Which formats are best for DVD backup
I want to convert some DVD and store it in my hard drive with the least space it need so I can store more movies. Would anyone tell me

Which format are best video quality so close to dvd and use lowest hard drive room.
DIVX, AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2.

well we can't tell you what is best, that is something you'll have to decide on your own! But doom9 has made some codec comparisons... you might want to check them out here (http://www.doom9.org/codec3-1.htm)

Well DivX is actually MPEG-4 and AVI is only a container format for the actual movie. I use DivX since the utilities for it are easy to use and understand.

dvd/svcd = mpeg-2
divx5/xvid = mpeg-4
other formats are rv9, wm9 and divx3


At the same bitrate mpeg-4 is imho superior to mpeg-2

i would only use mpeg-2 if you want to play your videos in a standalone player!

Right now there's a DVD player that can play DivX as well. So, if you've got that one, you can burn your DVD with DivX format.
