a friend of mine purchased a cendyne 4x dvd-rw drive (pioneer a05). we tried ripping "the matrix" through smartripper, it ripped all the way up to the first VOB file and then it just stopped and wouldnt do anything.. so i loaded up trusty old dvd decrypter and tried ripping in file mode, it started ripping and then came up with an error, clicked retry twice but it wouldnt go away, so i clicked cancel and then it began ripping, but only at 2.1x throughout the entire movie.. it took like 40 minutes to rip.

when it came up with the error message i think i remember it saying something about firmware, but i cant recall exactly what it said.

i've ripped this dvd on my liteon 163d dvd-rom and it ripped at an average of 7x.. so i know there is no problem with the disc..

the dvd-rw drive is set as the secondary master and we're ripping to the primary master.. dma is set on all drives and the aspi layer is installled..

here are some specs on the system if needed.

p3 950mhz
128mb ram
windows xp (w/ sp1 and all recent hot fixes)

does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to get it to rip faster through dvd decrypter or to read at all through smartrippper?

thanks for any help anyone can provide.

This drive has firmware limitations for the speed it can rip from encrypted discs.

you are correct in saying that the drive has firmware limitations about the rip speed for encrypted discs.. but that still wouldnt explain why smartripper cant rip from the discs.. what does is explain it is that the drive had not had its region set, and that was preventing it from ripping in smartripper and why dvd decrypter was giving error messages (yet still ripping).

region has been set, drive rips without any problem (except the fact it rips at 2x)
