View Full Version : Ripped DVD runs on computer but not standalone (other selfmade do) <- where to start?

As explained at large in this thread (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65279&pagenumber=1) I've been using DVD2ONE to rip a Buffy episode DVD to DVD-R. I stripped one of the 4 episodes to get a decent quality, and it looked fine on my PC played with PowerDVD. However, when burned to DVD-R my 2 standalones did recognise the DVD as DVD-Video but immediately turned to STOP.

Before that I did a successful rip of 'The Evil Dead' with DVD2ONE on the same DVD-R brand so I guess the problem lies somewhere in the process of stripping the episode from the DVD. However, as I've used several tools I'm not sure where to start looking for the cause.

Here's a small overview of what I did:

- DVD2ONE: ripping three eps to seperate folders
- Vobedit: joining the eps into one folder
- Ifoedit: creating new ifos, specifying the audio/subtitle type
- Ifoedit: pasting the correct subtitle colour
- Ifoedit: reducing the number of chapters so you can skip between eps
- DVD2ONE: tanscoding the DVD to fit on one DVD-R
- Nero: burning the a video-DVD

There's a lot of steps and also a lot of possibilies for something to go wrong. I was so sure everything went fine cause I could play my rip with PowerDVD both from my HD and from the DVD-R. Only my standalones won't do.

Can you think of any way for me to check the DVD structure to find out what might have gone wrong? Thanks.

Your main problem could be Nero. Ahead released 5.5.10.7b to meet its incompatibility issues with standalones when burning dvd video.

I suggest to use imagetools ver 0.89 to create an image that u eventually burn with decrypter. A guarranteed methode that didn;t produce a coaster for 150 concecutive burns.

Mmh, any other suggestions? I mean, I'll give imagetools a try yet I think it's quite unlikely that the problem is caused by Nero cause the 'Evil Dead' rip I burned with Nero ran fine on both standalones...

I used to use Nero and would have some DVD's play on my stand alone and some not play. I have since switched to Record Now Max and havn't had a problem since. The problem is, Nero will let you burn even if there are issues. Record Now will not burn until the movie is correct. I have had not one DVD to not play on my stand alone since switching to Record Now Max. Best of all Record Now Max is reasonable at ~$30.00

Man, I was really astonished to see that DVD Decrypter also can burn DVDs! I mean, why the heck is there no button to indicate there's a write mode behind it? You gotta press 'w' and get another interface...

Anyway, it's possible I authored the DVD correctly this time or it's really DVD Decrypter: my new DVD runs from DVD-RW on my standalone. Only problem so far was that the picture froze occasionally during the last ep so I'm gonna burn it to DVD-R and watch the complete eps to be sure.

All guides state the fact that u can use decrypter to burn an iso, not to mention hundreds of post repeating this.

Thats a good example to ne1 first read then post.

Actually, I've not read any on these guides on Doom9 that you mention. The guides I did read dealt with the topic I was interested in: DVD2ONE and there was no mention whatsoever of Decrypter. So forget about your example.

Apart from that: no matter how you put it, it's ridiculous to have a GUI that does not have any button for such an important function...

i think you burned a multi-session DVD and your stand alone player doesnt read those while your pc player does.

It also could be the way that you ripped. I know it sounds strange, but I've seen a difference between making a full backup of a DVD-5 with SmartRipper, which didn't work after burning, and ripping with DVD-Decrypter, which did. But with Scooby Doo (region 2) it was the other way around. Try doing it over again, but with different programs. It just might work this time.
