Jerky motion on playback of (S)VCD converted from DivX 3

After successfully converting many AVIs to VCD, I've suddenly stumbled across a problem I hoped would never encounter.

When playing back my newly burned VCDs (also tried SVCDs) on my Pioneer DV-47A the playback is "jerky", particularly when the camera pans. It's almost as if characters are moving in ever-so-slight slow-motion. I'm using the same media as in previous, successful efforts and have tried burning/arranging with VCDEasy, TSCV as well as plain vanilla Nero. The effect is always the same.

The source is a 615 Mb, 1228 Kbps, 23.976 fps, res. 544*288 (16:9), DIV3 = DivX v3 ;-) MPEG-4 (Low-Motion) AVI file. I extracted the audio to WAV using VirtualDub (direct stream, full processing wouldn't work) and am currently encoding a plain, standard NTSC-Film VCD at 1150kbps. TMPG tells me the input video is non-interlace so I'm not fooling around with IVTC or 3:2 pulldown or anything. On reading some previous posts (and the guide here on conversion) I've installed the old DivX 3.11 alpha codecs as well as the 5.02 pro I already had installed, but to no avail.

Any help you guys could provide would be much appreciated.

The problem is your source file which is 23.976 fps.

Is your dvd player ntsc compatible?

What I normally do is convert the soure video & audio to 25fps using vdub for the video, then besweet for the auido. I then encode using TMPGenc.

My DVD player (Pioneer Elite DV-47A) is NTSC compatable, in fact it was bought in the US. I've converted other NTSC AVIs to VCD without any problems, but with these last two there's been nothing but trouble.

I think your guide would be interesting. I sometimes make VCDs for friends who don't have NTSC capable players or televisions. Please post it if you have you have the time and the inclination!

Strangely enough the jerkiness went away when I burned with Nero. Only when authoring with VCDEasy or TSCV did I run into the jerkiness/asynch...very strange. I have made PAL SVCDs on VCDEasy before without any problems. This was a NTSC AVI that I had converted to MPEG and only burning with Nero (no chapters, no title screen, no nothing) worked.

Go figure...

Or, better yet, if anyone has an explanation, please let me know.

Sorry m8, been away a while.

This is what I normally do:
1. Scan video with vdub for errors
2. In vdub save audio uncompressed or if ac3 direct stream copy.
3. With vdub set the audio to no audio & direct stream copy video, setting frame rate to 25.000 fps.
4. Using Besweet GUI & Besweet.exe convert the audio to 25.000 fps.
5. With vdub open the 25fps video set this to direct stream copy, the set the audio to wav audio & open the 25fps audio file. Set the audio to direct stream copy.
6. Save as avi.
7. Convert to svcd using your favourite encoder.
