View Full Version : splitting mpeg2 file with tmpgenc 2.59

The second bin file dvd2svcd created was to large for the disk. So I open up tmpgenc 2.59 and go to mpeg tools. select merge and cut. locate the bbmpeg file created by dvd2svcd and select it for editing. I select the beginning 00:00:00 and ending with 50:37:00 .
Then I click on ok, before I can even get a chance to click on run, I get tmpgenc has encountered an error and needs to close. Please tell microsoft about his problem ...blah,blah
Anyone else have this problem? I am running Windows XP PRO, and an AMD 2000+ cpu, with 256MB ram and the file I was trying to cut was 828MB. But I would get the same error if I tried to cut only 5 minutes from it. Is the tmpgenc program not stable? Is there another program that can split an mpeg2 file. I tried Virtual dub, but it save as an avi file.
Thanks for any help in advance,
-cooter01

This is the wrong forum. First of all itīs a basic problem and on the other hand it has nothing to do with dvd2svcd.
You should better search the basic forum for the problem with too large files. It has been discussed several times.
Tip: open the file in a media player and pause it. Then try again cutting with tmpgenc. This should work.

hi winxi, it's not a flamed question ...i'm just curious.
how don't has nothing to do with dvd2svcd???
as i see Cooter01 was using dvd2svcd program:
"The second bin file dvd2svcd created was to large for the disk",
and this is the dvd2svcd basic topics thread.
but the most important is :
why it works if i follow your tip?
sometimes i have this problem, but don't understand how your tip help.
thanks in advance!

His problem appears to be with TMPG giving a GPF error when cutting a file. The source of the file might by DVD2SVCD, but the problem with the GPF is not. Now if he wished for help making the images smaller then this would be a DVD2SVCD issue, but it appears that this is not what he is asking.
If Cooter01 wants help reducing the file size this is the right place.
If Cooter01 wants help explaining the GPF when trying to cut an mpg file this may not be the best place as this is a TMPG issue and not a DVD2SVCD issue.

ok markrb ,
better is wait for his answer.
ps:
of course my poor english can confuse me but,
he wrote:
" The second bin file ... created was to large for the disk."
and, "go to mpeg tools. select merge and cut",
after "select it for editing" and select time from xx to yy!
semms to me that the file need to be cutted,
he is not merging files.
this is the first problem, reducing the file size, cos is too big for the disk.
than here is the right place.
and here:
he got the problem in tmpgenc too cos was trying to cut the file:
"...I get tmpgenc has encountered an error and needs to close. ..."
this is the second problem, this may not be the best place as this is a TMPG issue !
thanks!

@jorel:
As markrb wrote, the question from cooter01 is related to tmpgenc. He definately asks, how to cut the file with tmpgenc. It doesntīt matter if he has created the file using dvd2svcd or any other method. So i think , this post mainly belongs to the tmpgenc - forum.
why it works if i follow your tip?
To be honest, i also donīt know why it works. I have run into this problem, too. I searched another forum for this (not doom9īs) and found this solution. For me it did the job.
greets, winxi

Cooter01 here,
The reason I posted the question here is because DVD2SVCD created the bin file that was too large to fit on a disc not TMPGE. I did manage to cut it with easy video splitter, therefore, Winixi you should not criticize me for posting my question here!

Cooter01 your file may have been made with DVD2SVCD, but the problem was not with DVD2SVCD.
If you wanted help on why this file is too big then the problem belongs here, but your question was why TMPG was crashing and that is NOT a DVD2SVCD issue. On this one I must side with Winxi.

thanks for answer but now i'm more confused.
if i want help here in this thread about the big file
maded with dvd2svcd , i don't got it..
but,
if i post a new thread only changing the title, and asking about the same problem,i got help??
seems strange to me ,but it's ok!
thanks again!

jorel no it has nothing to do with a title.
It has to do with what is the question.
Is the Question.
1. TMPG is blowing up why?
or
2. DVD2SVCD makes files too big why and how can I fix this?
The question asked here was #1 and NOT #2. So the problem is with TMPG and not DVD2SVCD.

Winixi you should not criticize me for posting my question here! You didnīt post it here, but in the dvd2svcd advanced forum (before it was moved), and there it was the wrong place for sure!
@jorel:
if i post a new thread only changing the title, and asking about the same problem,i got help?? The main idea is, that people who use the search function, find their answers much quicker, if other people use suitable titles.

Winixi,

As I wrote in my first post, search the basic forum for this problem. It has been discussed in detail before.

Cooter01 a few quick helping tips for how to get an answer to your problem.
1. Search the forum before posting. Almost 50% of the questions asked here have been asked and answered before.
2. Identify what problem you wish to have help with.
3. Include as much info as possible.
4. Always include a log file. Most problems cannot be helped without it.
In your case I would guess, since I don't have a log file to work with that is all I can do, is that you are using TMPG in CQ mode. That happens to be very unreliable in regards to file size. Better methods include 2-pass VBR, CBR or use CCE as the encoder.

I think I'll give CCE a try.
Thanks, Markrb

@ Cooter01 - You might want to try TMPEG 2.510 for your cutting because I read that TMPEG 2.59 has problems.
(2cents) :)
