View Full Version : Movie List - Split by Ifoedit
Josh

I'm proposing we start a list of split movies. Or 2 lists possibly. A list of movies that can split successfully using the ifoedit split guide here Doom9's DVD-9 -> 2 DVD±R Guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm) , or here Thread discussion on splitting with ifoedit (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44830), and also make a list that can't be backed up or that is very difficult to back up using the guide. You may also want to try dvdfab, which is free and very easy to use. So, post your replies and what method you used to help each other out, and I'll edit the list on this first post and the 2nd post. Also please indicate which region the dvd was.
Update 11/4/03- dvdfab can split almost all movies and is much much easier. Try dvdfab first unless you're an expert. I would use dvdfab on almost every movie now.

Movies that can't be backed up, split to 2 discs with or without menus and extras:
Kate & Leopold - R1, and Jurassic Park II - R1 both have several pauses in the movies, reasons unknown. Could only get these movies to work without menus and extras, splitting out the movie first, then splitting the stripped out movie. Planet of the Apes would only work stripping out movie first (removing the angles) and splitting that as well.
Maybe dvdfab can do these movies now?

What guide are you referring too in that thread, there are actually several suggestions, guides, proposals, additions, improvements etc. throughout the thread...
Josh

Any of them.
Maybe in the posts people could say what method they used to split the movie successfully to save others the time of finding the way that works for that particular movie. Just an idea to help each other out.

Romeo Must Die
Kiss of the Dragon
13 Days
Rush Hour 2
I used ifoedit and went with ifoedit's choice location of where to make the split except for Rush Hour 2. Also, when I put in disc 1 for 13 Days and Rush Hour 2, the movie will not start unless I hit menu right after the the disc loads. Both of those movies are infifilms. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing that with us, will have to try it out next time a movie doesn't start. Just curious, did you try changing the precommand on those to make it start differently, or did you leave it with what ifoedit did?

@Josh: I think in your original posts, it is still not clear, which procedure in the long splitting thread you are referring to with the working/non-working discs...

I changed the precommand on disk 2 so the movie would continue w/o going to the menu first. I will look to see if I have any more infinfilms to see if my problem is isolated to just these types of films or if it us just a coincidence.
OOPS :p I quoted myself. I meant to answer Josh's question regarding the precommand change.

Star Wars Episode 1, Split normally, all other files added to both discs. Split point at chapter 21, when splitting strip out vobids 3 & 4 (other language titles), change 4th precommand only to Jump to Video Manager Menu, title 1. That will skip the warning, but not the intro movies. Disc 2 change 1st precommand to Jump to Title, then choose 1.
(Can be burned with Nero)
Josh
12th March 2003, 08:49
Godzilla, split normally. Don't change precommand on disc 1 if you want the menu. Change precommand on disc 2 to to Jump to Title 1 if you want it to start with the movie. Can be burned with Nero.
Josh
18th March 2003, 07:24
Shrek, split with removing vobids, 3,4, and 6. Split point where ifoedit chose. Then add all other files to both discs. Delete the vobs off the extras off disc 1. Change last precommand to jump to videomanager menu.
Josh
18th March 2003, 16:54
The Sum of All Fears, split where ifoedit chooses, add all other files to both discs, delete the vobs off the extras for disc 1. Disc 2 can hold it all.

18th March 2003, 22:26
Almost Famous
Split at chapter 15, place all extras on disc2 and chapter menus and studio logo on both discs. Everything fits nicely on DVD+R; you will have to check other formats. Details and problems encountered complying with 'DVD spec' using certain burn programs can be found here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47773).

Gladiator, Split at chapter 17 instead of Ifoedit reccomended split at layer break. No VobId deleted. Pretty easy. Currently about to start split of Saving Private Ryan, will post on that once done

I went ahead and split Shaft with no problems. I had to play around a little with the split location in order to get the movie and extras onto two discs. I don't remember where I actually ended up splitting (I will start keeping track of my splits) but I do remember it was around 4-5 chapters up from where ifo chose.
Also, I put most of the movie on one disc and with the remaining movie and extra features onto disc 2.

Movies split successfully. Most need the first play PGC changed to Jump to Video Manager Menu. (JumpSS_VMGM) in disk 1, and a straight jump to Title 1 in disc 2.:
Rules of Attraction
Road to Perdition
Knockaround Guys, (on this one, in order to watch the movie, you have to click on Select a chapter, and pick chapter 1, otherwise, if you click on 'Play' you get a Parental Violation error or something. There's probably a better change to the pre commands, to get 'play movie' to work. Anybody figure this one out?
The Ring
SwimFan. (Fits on one disc with EVERYTHING. There's a separate featurette on the other side of the DVD, but I don't know yet how to add that to the disk.....
The flick 'Below' is different. Here you need to change the LAST Pre Command to:
JumpSS_VTSM (Jump to titleset menu)
Title Nr. 1, Title Set Nr. 1, Menu: root
If you change ANY of the the first play PGC pre-commands to go to EITHER the Video Manager Menu, OR Title 1, and then hit DVD Play to test it, IfoEdit will 'Death Hang', and the only way to get out of it is to push the Power Off button on your computer........More on this flick here:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49274......
Once more I owe Josh big time :p , since I was clued in to changing the LAST Pre Command at one of the posts in this thread.............z

Abandon.
Pretty straightforward. Split at Chapter 17 since the extra features are rather big and won't fit on disk 2 if you split at the default (Chapter 10 or so)
No pre command changes on disk 1. I changed disk 2 to jump to title 1 to immediately resume the flick.
Remember to copy VTS_06_0.VOB (The title menu) to Disks 1 and 2.

Thanks Z for the nice comments!
The Abyss, pretty easy and straightforward. Split at where ifoedit chooses. Add the other file sets to both folders that are not already in the new folders. Change the precommand #3 on both discs to jump to video manager menu to skip the warnings. I left disc 2 with the menu because there are 2 versions of the movie. Can be burnt with Nero.

Yeah, I don't know if I've wrote much about it in other posts. It seems most movies that have more than 1 precommand, it's best to change the LAST precommand and not always f4. That's normally needed with movies that have a little movie intro before the actual menu, but skips the warnings before the movie intro to the menu. If it doesn't work though, just do it to the f4 precommand and don't worry about the other commands(always copy the ifo and bup and save them somewhere else in case the precommand doesn't work, then you can just put them back in the split folder).
Hope that wasn't too confusing...
Josh
25th March 2003, 06:11
The Musketeer. Also easy. Split at chapter 9, add other filesets to both discs. Change precommand 2 on disc one 1 jump to videomanager menu, and on disc 2 change precommand 2 to jump to title 1. Can be burned with Nero.
Josh
27th March 2003, 06:56
Planet of the Apes. Easy. Split movie, add other file sets to both discs. Change precommand 2 on disc 1 to jump to video manager menu. Change precommand 2 to jump to title 1. Can be burned with Nero.
Update 3/27/03- Movie stops in opening scene with monkey in simulator, with or without angles in the movie. Currently looking for a fix.

Josh,
It's great you're keeping a list of successful splits in your first post but I suggest you take note of the region code of each movie. PAL and NSTC DVDs maybe be authored differently. And also, if there were any "special" editions or versions too.
Just my 2 cents.
Josh

Ok, I don't have a problem with that. I'll update the movies I've done and any others I can see. Thanks 2COOL.

28th March 2003, 07:22
Planet of the Apes. Was a tough one, the solution was the same as Jurassic Park. No menus, just the movie only. Copy all files with dvd decryptor to hard drive. Strip out the movie only, strip out angle 2 vobids throughout the movie. Then split it. Imgtools and dvd decryptor to burn.
Oh yeah, I also had checked Remove Angle/llvu point when splitting the disc too.

Josh
29th March 2003, 00:53
I'll do my best to remember. I remember that it was a tough. It looks like I did that one the same way as Jurassic Park and Planet of the Apes. Copy all files to the hard drive with dvd decryptor. Strip out the movie only and angles if there are any. Then split the movie. I couldn't get it to work with menus or extras. Movie only. Hope that helps!

This one's a snap. The entire movie fits on one disk!!! (VTS_01.x). Then you can put the special features on disk2. IE, you don't need to split it with IfoEdit!!
Here's what I did:
1. Ripped it w/ DeCrypter into DVD_Original folder. (any name for the folder will do)
2. Made a Disk1 and Disk2 folder.
3. Made a VIDEO_TS folder in each disk folder.
3. Copied the following from the DVD_Original folder to the VIDEO_TS folder in Disk1:
VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01.0.IFO and VTS_01.0.BUP
VTS_01.0.VOB (this is the menu VOB btw)
4. MOVED the following from the DVD_Original folder to the VIDEO_TS folder in Disk1:
VTS_01.1.VOB Thru VTS_01.5.VOB.
Total bytes used: 4.31Gig
5. Opened VIDEO_TS.IFO (in disk1) in IfoEdit and changed First play PGC pre-command to:
JUMPSS_VTSM Jump to Titleset:
Title_Nr: 1, TitleSetNr: 1, Menu: root
(this command works really well lately on MOST movies...Better than jumping to the Video Manager Menu)
5. SAVED IT!
6. Did the Get VTS Sectors.
7. Hit DVD Play to test it.
8. Burned using Data mode via Nero.
Disk2:
1. Copied the following files from the DVD_Original folder to the VIDEO_TS folder in Disk2.
VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP
VTS_01.0.IFO and VTS_01.0.BUP
VTS_01.0.VOB (this is the menu VOB btw)
Btw, you could just copy them from Disk1, then you won't have to edit the First Play PGC pre-command (Step 3 below), since it's already been done on disk 1.
2. MOVED the following from the DVD_Original folder to the VIDEO_TS folder in Disk2:
VTS_02_x.xxx (all files)
VTS_03_x.xxx (all files)
3. Opened VIDEO_TS.IFO (in disk2) in IfoEdit and changed First Play PGC precommand same as disk 1 above.
4. SAVED it.
5. Did Get VTS Sectors.
6. Hit DVD Play to test it.
7. Burned it as above..
BTW, JOSH.....All the movies I've done are R1..............
This movie would be a good one to learn on, since it demonstrates all the facets of how to backup/split a DVD.......

Impressive! I can't remember why I put it on 2 discs, usually when it fits on 1 dvd I just do 1. Oh well. I made the changes to the movie list. I also just did Maid in Manhatten, but it fit on 1 disc too so I didn't put it on the list. There's 2 versions, full screen and wide. Just delete the vobs of the one you don't want. Those quick ones are nice!

29th March 2003, 09:44
i'm confused here..... i havent come across a movie or episodic dvd that cant be split just by ripping the vobs and divinding them up in order... into 2 sub 4.3gb dirs... renaming them to 1_01 and on etc then hitting create ifos in each dir, open up again get vts then save then burn with nero?
are the ones people list as problematic in this thread... thru the ifoedit automatic splitting? and has anyone just tried the manual way? (ya loose menus etc but nothin else so far anyways...)
Josh
29th March 2003, 16:33
It has angles, and 2 versions of the movie woven together in the same files set. So I don't think it would work manually. But yeah, that's from splitting it with ifoedit. I actually have gotten it to work, had to strip out the movie only removing the angles and chose the version of the movie I wanted first, then split that. But it has a couple of pauses in the movie which I can't explain, that's why I left it on the problematic list.
jaquestati
29th March 2003, 20:06
which movie in particular are you talking about.... have you evgfer tried just copyin all the vobs and renaming making new ifos? you're probably right..... i just wondered...
Josh
29th March 2003, 22:36
The movie is Kate & Leopold. I've never tried renaming and making new ifos. Please post in detail and easy terms how to do it. :)
If anybody's interested- I just tried Pinnacle Instantcopy 7 on Kate & Leopold and it appears to have worked. But, you can see pixelation, looks kind of like an svcd but a little bit better. From those results I prefer to split and keep the quality instead of re-encode. My personal opinion only, don't mean to put down those who like to re-encode. :)

i posted a thread about it yesterday :) :(
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49769
re instant copy.... i find dvd2one works really well if the movie is under 5.9gbs or so..... if its more than that it works a lttle less well tho WAY better than svcd quality... most people i show it to even on 6gb plus movies cant tell anything is different from the dvd even on the big hdtv/prog scan setup...... depends on the movie tho.... me i dont like lossy rips..... and wil only do em if a movie is say 5.5 gigs or less and i dont want to waste 1/4th a dvd blank on the last bit if ya know what i mean...

Jurassic Park III. Easy. Don't know why this one would work with the menu and bonus material and why Jurassic Park I wouldn't. Maybe I'll have to give Jurassic Park I another shot, maybe I messed up on that one somewhere.
Anyway, split movie at where ifoedit chooses. Add all extras but leave off 02, 03, and 04 vobs off disc 1. All extras fit ok on disc 2. Nero complains about this one so I used Imgtools and DVD Decryptor.
Thanks for the thread title change too, it's better.
Josh
11th April 2003, 06:07
Jurassic Park II. Everything pretty easy. I chose splitting point at cell 28 so disc 2 would have enough room for all the extras. Disc 2 pauses in 3 places however, but if you fast forward for 1 second it continues fine. Anyone know why the pauses? I may have forgotten to do Get VTS sectors on disc 2 come to think of it, could that be the cause??
Josh
13th April 2003, 06:29
Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets. Easy. Split where ifoedit tells you to, change last precommand on disc 1 to
JUMPSS_VTSM Jump to Titleset:
Title_Nr: 1, TitleSetNr: 1, Menu: root
and on disc 2 jump to title 1.

Has everyone downloaded the new version of dvd decryptor 3.1.5.0? I think it deserves some donations.
I had a question about one of it's updates that says:
"Added the abilty to parse the ISO filesystem"
Does that mean dvd decryptor can now split movies as well to 2 isos?
Update: I just went in the settings for iso mode and changed it from auto to 4.37GB, and it's making 2 iso files for the movie I'm testing it on. We'll see how it comes out.
Josh
13th April 2003, 23:47
Ok. 2 iso files were made. Daemon Tools successfully loaded and played the first iso (I00), menu and all. But for the 2nd iso (I01), Daemon Tools give the follwoing error: Unable to Mount Image. Invalid image file.
So maybe that is something still in the works. It was pretty cool though- or the concept behind it.
Update- But.. if you load the mds file in Daemon tools, it plays the whole movie from both isos. So maybe that feature is only for playing movies off the computer, and not burning the isos.

anyone tried dvdshrink 103 yet?
it works amazingly in REAUTHORING mode you can just split any movie by cropping it and make any dvd9 (non multiangle) dvd into 2 seperate dvds with no reencoding etc ....
even easier than my old ifoedit renaming way...

Apollo 13, R1, widescreen. Easy one with all extras. I split around 1:29 or so to be able to fit all extras on disc 2. No problems at all.
Josh
26th April 2003, 22:49
The X-files, R1. I split at around 1:29 to leave room for all extras on disc 2.
007 Die Another Day, R1. Sorry, I've haven't posted my movies for quite a while. I'll have to go through and post the others I have backed up since. This movie reminded me because it was so tough. The only successful way was using dvdxcopy.
