Buying a new drive... (selling A04 to a friend).

What's best?
Sony 500AX or Pioneer A05?

I've heard some complaints on Sony but the specs look great...
And Pioneer is only DVD-R...

I liked A04 a lot, so I'm a little puzzled!

Save some more money and buy the Cendyne, which is the Pioneer A05. An OFFICE supply company that has MAXimal service has the Cendyne on sale this week (store only) and with the $50 instant rebate and a $50 mail-in rebate, the price before taxes is $169.99

Personally, I opted for a Sony DRU-500AX a couple of days ago and boy was it nice to finally find one after so many months waiting! It's a pity NEC didn't manage to sort out dual-format compatibility for their firmware for the NEC 1100a - in fact, as a consequence of waiting for the NEC instead of the Sony (before Christmas), I 'missed the boat', so-to-speak, and ended up waiting 2.5 months for the DRU-500ax to become available again in the UK - thanks for messing me around NEC!!

Anyway, if anyone wants a DRU-500ax, then you can find one in stock (at the time of typing!) here:

Sadly, the NEC is now out of stock at BigPockets (at least for the timebeing anyway).

It's available @Novatech (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/EWspec.html?c=NEC-ND10SP) for £116.

unless I can get my 500ax to burn at 4X with my 200 Ritek G04 4X media then I regret wasting $350. I had it burn I think only two or three times at 4X. Funny thing is everytime I do a test burn it always does the test burn at 4X. Sony's firmware is overriding it. Ok maybe I'll uncheck that bufferunderrun crap. I also tried different ide channels, etc. Have the lastest 2.0e firmware which just came out today and that didn't solve squat.

ok nevermind....I flashed my dru500ax to 1.0d firmware and all is well I can burn @4X with Ritek 4X media. Burnt over 7 or 8 now. Get it from sonydru500a.com

Pioneer mechanics, as tradition, sux a bit.
CD-RW reading is a big issue in EVERY Pioneer unit I have tried (both CD/DVD players and recorders, DVR-105/A05 included).
And it "seems" that they need constantly massive firmware updates (have these units any kind of smart calibration inside??).
Some firmwares ago with combination of certain DVD-R media there was even the possibility to damage DVD recorder! (without newer firmware fix/update).

Nec or Teac are a good choice, Teac has mount rainier support (for CD-Rs) and Nec units despite low price seems a very good choice because I have tried them quite well (also with cheap +R media + playstation2 ;) ) and I know that they supply many other customers for DVD+R/RW units (also the new Plextor DVD+R/RW is based on Nec mechanics/circuitry).

At last, answers to the question what to buy. Buying is easy but what to buy or ...not... to buy? What was the question.
Like to here more. You experts on burning DVD you know what the best burner is, some comparison would be nice.
