View Full Version : 2 Disc Movie and AC3

I am backing up a 2 Disc movie, and at the beginning of the second disc, there is a few seconds of black space, along with a bit of junk I need to crop out.

Now I could encode the video, then use VDubMod to mux the video/audio, and just delete the part I don't want.

However, I don't use VDubMod to mux AC3, as I am told that AVIMux is vastly superior in this respect.

1. Should I just use VDubMod? 2. Is VDubMod actually BAD for AC3 muxing, or is it just that AVIMux is perfect? 3. Is there any way to crop video and audio out while still using AVIMux to mux?

I've tried editing the beginning .vob on the second disc so that the few "empty seconds" don't appear, but then the audio disapeared, (I used Chopper XP). If I just crop out that part of the video (using avisynth or Virtualdub or whatever), that still leaves the AC3 audio needing to be cropped. Is there some program that you can use to crop a specific amount of time from an AC3 file?

I know the answer is probably really, stupid simple. It's probably sitting right in front of me. But this is driving me insane.

I'm not so sure if this will work for you but when I encoded FOTR:EE I followed some info I found here on the forum.
There was a certain amount of black frames at the end of the first disc and at the beginning of the second. I loaded all vobs from both discs into dvd2avi and demuxed the ac3. When encoding the video I trimmed the black frames (25 in total) in avisynth. Muxing the resultant video file and the demuxed ac3 resulted in audio that was in sync all the way through.
I figure there was no silence added in either ac3 track for the black frames so they were joined seamlessly in dvd2avi.
Hopefully this may work for your movie.

I've always been using Nandub and VDubMod for muxing AC3 into avi, and I never experienced any problems.

So, I'd just open the movie with VDubMod, set audio and video to direct stream copy, set the interleaving for the ac3 to 160ms/160ms (that's what I'm using), then cut out the black frames and save a new avi file.
I don't know what could be done better about muxing AC3 - VDubMod does it just fine

I confirm what theReal said, AC3 muxing is absolutely no problem in VDM. I use 96ms/96ms though. Guess just another working solution ;)

Anyway, it's ve~ry simple, you encode normally without cutting anything, nor touch the ac3.
Then you open your avi in VDM, load the ac3, make the right preload/interleaving/delay settings, mark the range you wanna have (go to the first frame that should be included, click on /_ then go to the last... bla bla bla), it will be marked blue, save it, that's it.

All right, I'll try vdubmod. It's just that AVIMux works so well, and I always had video stuttering problems with nandub and AC3.

Might as well give it a shot.

AVI-Mux GUI will support subtitles in SRT format soon, so you won't want to use VDubMod for long ;)

2. Is VDubMod actually BAD for AC3 muxing, or is it just that AVIMux is perfect? AVI-Mux GUI is certainly not perfect, otherwise I wouldn't have spent about 60 hours on it last week, some of which on tracking weird bugs, arising only under very special circumstances ;)

I still wonder why VDubMod does not support more than 2 audio streams :D

Video cannot yet be cropped. Since it often requires reencoding (or better: it should be done while reencoding, to ensure proper keyframe placement), it is not scheduled either.

If you need to crop audio and video, use VDubMux to create the file. If it does not play back properly, or if you want to replay the file from CD at a reading speed of 4x, use AVI-Mux GUI to remux the file created by VDubMod

I think you misunderstood him, as he probably used the wrong terms. He didn't ment crop, but cut.

To cut, you don't need to reencode. Just make as described above. Of course, make sure video and audio are on direct stream copy.

If you want to cut afterwards, you must be lucky to find a keyframe at the right position

I use AVI split to cut my avi: http://ia.microdee.net/
@ least to show me the cutting results...

Hope this help.

Hmm..this is exacly what I was going to ask..I muxed my ac3 and avi file with your software, but I guess I had to cut this 1.4gb file with VD cause I thought it has to be cutted in keyframe-position.

So it isn't recommended to cut with avi-mux, so that after I have loaded my avi and ac3 files to your software and I set output mode to 700mb max? This gives me axcatly 700mb file which isn't cutted exacly at keyframe, or is it?

Another thing..this srt-subtile muxing..how does it work? does it give me somehow same kind of file when I burned my subtitles in movie?

Oops..sorry, I was in too huryy to delete my vob-files that I didn't read the other threads..avi-mux cuts only at keyframes :)

Subtitle muxing in AVI-Mux GUI works the same way as with submux.

Yeah, Vdubmod works just fine for AVI/AC3 muxing. I was just still spooked from Nandub's awful AC3 muxing that I didn't want to use anything remotely related to it vdub.

96/96 works perfectly, thanks again.

How does a command line mode work with the new AVI-Mux GUI 1.13? Is there any help available? What should I do to cut and join AVI files using a command line?

With "works the same way as submux" I merely refered to the output file...sorry, command line mode is not yet available. Had too much to do :(

Possible would only be to use the script commands and pass the name of the script file via command line. Then, all you needed to do would be pressing "start".

i've done Matrix
with divx 5.03 and dual ac3 files Italiano (ac3) and English (ac3)!

....
i use bsplayer to play it!
The problem is:
The first track i mux in the avi file has a right audio delay! (when i play it)
Whereas the second i insert (even if i've imposted the right delays in avimux) is wrong! (when i play it)

.....So...if ,for example i put :
first english and second italiano.........-> english is right played, and italiano not!

.........
first italiano and second english ->italiano is right played, and english not!

Is it a problem of bsplayer or of avimux?

very thnks

The delay will be applied to the track which is selected, that means to the track which has a blue bar.

So if the first track has a blue bar, and you right-click on the 2nd track and set a delay, it will still be applied to the 1st track (i'll fix that somewhen, but currently i've absolutely no time).

Could that be the problem?

MrMine
26th March 2003, 16:36
mmmm

i'm sure to have done the right settings!
first track has a delay of -103
the second has a delay of -104

even if i've done that mistake, you can see the two tracks
has practicaly the same delay!

the prblem it's the order of inseting them!

alexnoe

How much is the movie out of sync then?

MrMine
26th March 2003, 16:44
SO!

i've done some test!
I've seen that:

1) the first track is never out of sync
2) the second track,if it's played from the beginning (and
never stopped),it continues to play right...but if i stop it or
i go to another point of the movie (with seek) it goes out of sync
of about (i think 1 second)

alexnoe
26th March 2003, 16:47
Does the amount of time which it goes out of sync depend on the position which you seek to? Meaing, if you seek to 10 mins, does it go less out of sync than when seeking to 1 hour?

MrMine
26th March 2003, 16:50
i think yes!
the impression is that you've described!

However i use spdif out with ac3 decoder hardware!
is it linked to some settings of interleave or something
similar in options of avimux?

alexnoe

It should not be.

Could you try another player? At the moment, i'm rather lost concerning that problem...
