View Full Version : Dual XP2100's or Single P4 2.8Ghz?

I've got some serious CCE encoding ahead of me, and I'm just exploring the idea of upgrading my Video Editing machine to speed up the process. Currently I have;

XP2100+ Palamino
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP
768MB Kingston PC2700
1 x 30GB IBM ATA-100 7200RPM (system)
2 x 30GB IBM ATA-100 7200RPM in RAID 0(scratch disk)
Leadtek Geforce 2 Pro 64MB

I've never even used CCE, but imagine it would benefit greatly by either a Dual AMD system, or a quick P4 system. Which would be best for CCE encoding out of these two configs;


2 x XP2100+ B-core Throuroughbreds (overclocked & MP moddified to XP2400+)

1 x 30GB IBM ATA-100 7200RPM (system)

you should get about 1.7 speed in CCE, if you dont, blame the VIA motherboard.

Looks like I'm blaming my VIA motherboard then. :(

Which is better, a higher score or a lower one? I have gotten around 2, but last night while encoding Final Fantasy it got to over 3, but that turned out to be a fubar encode so it may have scewed the score.

Go single AMD route. I've got an XP2400 overclocked to 2400mhz (12*200) on an nforce2 (epox 8rda, corsair xms 3500). I get between 2.4-2.5 in CCE. The vast majority of the newer thoroughbreds (rev b) can do 2.3-2.4 GHZ, with simple air cooling (I use an alpha 8045).

0.5 is encoding time will take 2x longer than clip play length
1.0 is realtime
2.0 encoding time will take half the play time.

(for each pass that is)

Yeah, I've got pretty much the same setup for my games machine, except I've got an SLK-800 heatsink.

I seem to be getting around 1.7-2.0 with my current setup in my video editing machine, so if I only stand to gain .8-.4 I don't think it really be worth it. I do most of my encoding overnight anyway, which is usually enough time to do single movie encodes. What CCE score would a P4 2.8Ghz get?

I'd imagine that would depend on two factors: 1. whether or not you're using CCE 2.6+ or not, and 2. the FSB of your P4. I'm not sure if CCE 2.66 uses P4 optimizations (read: SSE2). If you're running a 533mhz FSB on the P4, it should probably approach ~2.2 or so. Keep in mind that a 2400 mhz athlon on a 400mhz FSB is more along the lines of an athlon "3100-3200."
