View Full Version : Wide Screen/Full Screen strip

I have a few movies, (Top Gun, ID4,..), that have both Wide Screen/Full Screen or Theatrical/Director's Cut on the same side. Obviously, these movies would fit on one DVDr if one of the two movies were stripped.
If you extract all files, can you strip and rebuild with just IfoEdit?
Is this a common procedure?
If so, please please please direct me to a guide.
Thank you.

If you opt to keep one of your aspect ratios (widescreen or fullscreen), you still have to deal with your aspect ratio selection menu. Unfortunately, the procedure to getting rid of that menu is not the same for all DVDs. I, for one, don't want it present as I know exactly what my movie is set at after deleting the other. But if you don't care if it's present, there's a simple fix for that so regardless what aspect ratio you selected in your menu you'll always get the right one whether you pick Full or Wide.

Sounds great :) Any how to guides you can hook me up with, please?

@BlueFlame
With assumption you want to retain your menus...
A. If you want to completely take out your aspect ratio selection, there's no generic guide on doing it. 99.9% of all DVDs are authored a certain way with GPReg values playing a big part on navigations. I've written some cheat sheets on some region 1 DVDs which can be easily found in my 2COOL's Cheat Sheet List (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43142) in the sticky threads section. These cheat sheets are DVD specific as you can't use the same procedure on any other DVD that has an aspect ratio selection menu present.
B. If you don't mind having your aspect ratio selection menu present, then here's a guide to help you out.
Editing Aspect Ratio Selection Menu For Only 1 Aspect Ratio
________________________________________________________________________
First, you need to know what your title numbers are for your fullscreen and widescreen movies. To inquire about that, this is what I do.
1. Using IFOedit, go to VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMG Overview: / Number of Title Play Maps: You should have two Titles with identical large number of chapters. Heres an example below.
VMG Overview:
Number of Title Play Maps: 8 (VMG_PTT_SRPT)
Title 1: VTS_05_*, TTN_1 (Angles: 2) (Chapters: 32) (Start Sector 109851)
Title 2: VTS_06_*, TTN_1 (Angles: 2) (Chapters: 32) (Start Sector 636142)
Title 3: VTS_03_*, TTN_1 (Angles: 1) (Chapters: 2) (Start Sector 7616)
Title 4: VTS_02_*, TTN_1 (Angles: 1) (Chapters: 2) (Start Sector 4297)
________________________________________________________________________
2. Now we need to know which one of those is fullscreen and widescreen. Go to your Title 1s Titleset IFO, VTS_05_0.IFO / VTS Overview / Menu attributes:. If it shows (4:3), then this Title 1 is your fullscreen movie. If it shows (16:9), then Title 1 is widescreen.
Video: MPEG-2 720x480 (NTSC) (NTSC 525/60) (4:3) (not specified perm.display) ) fullscreen
Video: MPEG-2 720x480 (NTSC) (NTSC 525/60) (16:9) (not specified perm.display) ) widescreen
Now you know which one is your widescreen and fullscreen Title and Titleset (VTS).
________________________________________________________________________
From this point, I will show you how to make your widescreen movie play even if you selected your fullscreen option in your selection menu.
3. Go to VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMGM_PGCI_UT. Every PGC-Menu has a PGC Command Table that contains your pre and post commands. Browse through ALL of them looking for instance of Title 1. View your findings below
If you have this have this exact command present, then go to next step. (JumpTT) Jump to Title: 1
If you have a command like this, then go to step 6. If GPreg<?> == GPreg<?> then (JumpTT) Jump to Title: 1
________________________________________________________________________
4. In each PGC-Menu / PGC Command Table, edit each command as follows. To do that, right click on line, select Edit Command, and change your Title Nr to 2.
(JumpTT) Jump to Title: 1 [30 02 00 00 00 01 00 00 ]
(JumpTT) Jump to Title: 2 [30 02 00 00 00 02 00 00 ]
Remember to do this for ALL of your PGC-Menus on this exact command.
________________________________________________________________________
5. Go to step 7
________________________________________________________________________
6. Each PGC-Menu / PGC Command Table, edit each command as follows. To do that, double-left click on line to get your HexEdit Module. This is what I see in my example of what I have in my Hex editor.
00000000 30 22 00 00 00 01 09 00 0
Left click on 1 to place your cursor. Edit that 1 to a 2 and press OK. You will be back in your PGC-Menu and if you want to see if you edited correctly, click on a nearby PGC-Menu and then click back to review your edited command line.
Remember to do this for all of your PGC-Menus on this type of command.
________________________________________________________________________
7. Save your VIDEO_TS.IFO
________________________________________________________________________
8. DVD-Play in IFOedit to preview and test. If you had selected fullscreen in your aspect ratio selection menu, you will now see only your widescreen.

Thanks for the help 2COOL.
Which Hex lines do I edit? Which # do I edit?
The Title Set is 1.

You're not in the correct PGC-Menu. As stated in step 3, you need to find commands containing "Jump to Title: ?". Your image doesn't show any.
Title 1 is your widescreen? what title is your fullscreen?

2COOL, I'm really trying to do this. Please don't give up on me. :)
Movie is Top Gun. 4:3 and 16:9, but in the two Title Sets, they both show as 4:3. Not worried about this.

Bro, I looked through every PGC-Menu (1-13), and never saw a "(JTT)".
As before, these two pics are as close as I can come.

i am confused as hell..
i am trying this with Maid In Manhattan. it has 4:3 and 16:9. vts_01_xx is 16:9 vts_02_xx is 4:3. the PGC command tables is structured with the (JumpTT) Jump To Title 1.. on and on.. do i just want to take everything that is pointing at Title 2 (4:3) and change it to a 1? the hex on this dvd is like so:
[30 02 00 00 00 01 00 00] for title 1
[30 02 00 00 00 02 00 00] for title 2 et al..
then on down the chain i see (JumpSS) Jump to TitleSet (vts): 1 Title (ttn) 1, root-menu [30 06 00 01 01 83 00 00]
is that relevant?
im confused.

I just did Maid in Manhatten [R1]last week using his guide. I had two titles: Title 1 was for my widescreen and Title 2 was for my fullscreen. I edited everything that was associated with my Title 2. To my knowledge, there were only 2 instances of (JumpTT) Jump to Title: 2.
Why would you want to edit your (JumpSS) Jump to TitleSet (vts): 1 Title (ttn) 1, root-menu [30 06 00 01 01 83 00 00]? It shows Title 1.
In this DVD, I would only edit that if it was (JumpSS) Jump to TitleSet (vts): 1 Title (ttn) 2, root-menu [30 06 00 02 01 83 00 00]. But there are no commands like this in this DVD.
It doesn't hurt to try it out. Just save your IFO and BUP to another folder before editing. Do the changes, save IFO, Get VTS Sectors, and press DVD Play button to test and preview.
Hopefully it will work but if it doesn't just copy over your saved original IFO and BUP over and Get VTS Sectors again to refresh.
Remember, this procedure does NOT remove your Aspect Ratio Selection Menu. All you did was edit the unwanted aspect ratio button the same as the wanted one so if you accidentally picked your unwanted fulscreen movie, it'll play widescreen.
But my apologies, there are different if-then command scenarios that I have forgot to put in. When I get the time, I edit the guide again.

okay, i will look at it again, thank you for your ever (as always) quick response. so, youre saying i just need to change the one PGC command in the 1st chain to point to title1?
what im a little confused on is what do i point to what. title1 is widescreen and title2 is fullscreen. i am getting rid of fullscreen and keeping widescreen. have you added this (or are you going to add it) to your cheat sheet page?
thanks again,
~mghtbgiant.

Again, there were only two of this command present in your VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMGM_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_#'s
(JumpTT) Jump to Title: 2
Right click on line and change the Title Nr. from 2 to 1.
I hope this helped you.

worked like a charm.. thank you very much!
on a related note.. how silly is it to remove the aspect ratio selection screen when it is architected like this?

I'm having difficulties with working on Columbia Tristar DVDs with dual aspect ratios. A lot of them follow a similiar navigation pattern I haven't broken yet. One day it'll come to me. I sometimes take the easy way out on doing the method you've done so that I can move on to the next backup project. I hate having to spend a lot of overtime on one DVD.

I have a foregin film DVD and it has a badly stretched video. When I play it with PowerDVD on computer and choose NOT to "keep aspect ratio" I am able to resize the display window to make the "strecthing" go away.
Is there a way to edit/re-author the Video to fix the issue so I can play it with the right aspect ratio on the standalone DVD player?
The original authoring appears to be a bad/unsuccessful attempt to resize a widescreen format to a fullscreen.
If this is out of place here, please feel free to move but my problem appear to touch on the issue of aspect ratio.
