cce mulitpass encode error,,,,HELP PLZ!!

this is super strange, i've re-encoded more thatn 20 dvd-r with cce, all without a problem. cce worked great, but now, its acting wierd and nothing i've been able to do has fixed it. when i encode with 5 passes in cce, i get my settings from bitrate viewer, set it all up perfectly. The vaf file encodes perfectly, says the right amount of frames, but instead of saying 345000 frames (for example) on the m2v encode. It multiplies the frames by the passes, (1725000 frames) and takes like 25 hours instead of 9 hours or so. And on every pass it over writes the old m2v and starts over completely, so its encoding each pass seperately, but its not adding information to the vaf file. I have tried everything to fix this, reformatted, fdisked my mbr, different dvd2avi different avs builds, nothing has been able to solve the problem. Even if use a regular uncompressed avi file from dvd2avi in cce it still encodes each pass seperately. its screwed, and i dont know what else to do. please help.

Thats absolutely alright.
READ the manual and the guides, then you'll see that if you encode 5 times multipass it *WILL* need 5 times the encoding time.

yeah, but its not supposed to encode each pass seperately. Ive done this a million times, and this is NOT normal. One pass vbr takes 2.5 hours 5 pass should take about 9 hours or so, yeah, takes a lot longer, but 25 hours? no way. and it should do all passes in one shot, not each pass seperately.

That sounds exactly like how CCE is suppose to act. Each pass overwrites the previous passes .mpv file, and each pass is a complete reencode of the video. So for a "5" pass encode it takes 6 full passes, including .vaf creation.

so by using that as a basis, 9 passes (+ the 1 for the vaf) would take 25hours, 5 passes (+ 1 for the vaf) would take 15hours.

lol, who said anything about 9 passes? i'm not a rookie, i've done this a million times, cce sp 2.5 is not supposed to encode each pass seperately. it is supposed to do the whole movie in one shot, giving each frame 5 passes for bitrate allocation, and then outputting the frame ONE TIME, not 5 times in 5 different mpv files. Can anyone that knows what they are talking about provide some usable help?

ok, lets start at the basics.

1 pass VBR creates the VAF and does a CQ_VBR at the same time

multipass VBR does a pass thru the source to create the VAF (if it doesnt already exist), then it does n number of passes, one after the other.

I can only second that, multiple passes are performed on the whole movie one after the other, ande certailnly not on a frame by frame basis.
I always do 2 passes, VV is right that this is a continuous process, first VAF encoding then start again from the beginning to create mpv file. But VV, you'll see, in a 2 Pass mode, that halfway through the progress bar, KB file size counter resets to 0 and performs the second pass from half the progress bar to its end.
Same goes for 5 passes.

Sure CCE won't generate 5 different mpv files (is it really the case for you ?) but only one vaf and one "final" mpv file.

hmm, well yes, this is exactly whats happening. the kb counter resets and the mpv starts new halfway through the encode if its 2 passes. or 1/5 the way throught the encode if its 5 pass. but cce has never done this before. it has always encoded it 5 pass on a frame by frame basis. it would encode it all one time, with all 5 passes, not one pass then the next pass, etc. so this is really strange to me. i give up.

CCE has ALWAYS worked this way for me. Plus I don't really see how it would be able to proceed several passes on a frame by frame basis, considering the way B and P pictures are encoded. At least a GOP basis would be possible, but not a frame basis. Anyway, don't worry too much about it as long as the final result is OK (which always was for me).
