question for neuron2 about guide=3

I had read in another post of yours concerning this about guide=3

I am doing mostly NTSC R1 TV shows, so from what I have read is that the guide=3 is probably more appropriate for PAL sources or maybe R2 release made from PAL sources. Would it then be safe to assume that most NTSC R1 DVDs are straight NTSC and not from any PAL sources? I am doing TV season epsiodes like Babylon 5, Star Trek: TNG, Sopranos and other Region 1 NTSC TV episodes. I think I should be using guide=1 for these.

My assumption is that R1 releases are made from the original Film/NTSC hybrid sources rather than a PAL source and then telecined to NTSC. Is this a correct assumption or am I way off?

I hate to complicate your life, but it's never safe to assume anything. You can only analyse the specific source material you have and then decide the appropriate treatment. But it is true that most of the sources you describe are straight NTSC 3:2 pulldown or 3:2/video hybrids. I've only seen material requiring mode=3 in short clips sent to me by manono. If you hadn't limited your subject line to me, he might have answered. :) Maybe he will.
