Hi everybody, first - I would like to thank to all developers of DVD2SVCD - perfect program.
Second - DVD2SVCD workes fine for me, no problems appears during encoding the movie but ... first problem appers during playback - the video and audio is freezing. I do not have standalone DVD-player, use only WinDVD and PowerDVD.
With settings "Movie Offset = 2" and "CD Overlap = 2" in version 1.0.9 built 3 is the start and end of all CD´s full of freezing. In the version 1.1.1 built 2 problem occurs too - setting "Movie Offset = 2 and 4" is unusefull.
Could somebody explain me please what do settings "Movie Offset" and "CD Overlap" exactly do? Why do SVCD movies freeze during playback? What setting should help to solve this problem?
I would like to buy standalone DVD player, but there's no guarantee for me that all encoded movies will play without freezing.
Thanks a lot for any advice. And sorry, if my problem were mentioned in the past - I have not found yet anything to this. Johny5

did you try to play the mpeg files that are in your directory? (play them with power dvd not wmp).
also, i noticed that the vob files are already on your hard drive.
do those vob files play ok? do the ripped vob files play ok?
that could be the source of the problem as the vob files have already been ripped from the dvd. if either the original vob files on your hard drive or the ripped vobs from internal rip don't play correctly you may want to try to rip them straight from the dvd.

My first red flag is the audio bitrate is too low. Raise it to at least 160. Personally I don't go below 192 myself.
128 audio is a known issue with many DVD players. It can cause exactly your problem.
To answer a couple of your original questions.
CD overlap puts that many seconds of the end of the previous CD on next one so if it cuts off in the middle of a sentence and so on you don't loose the idea of what is going on after you change cd's.
I always used to use 5 myself, but you can use almost any number between 1 and 8.
Offset delays the start of the video enough to allow the CD to spin to full speed. The default is 2 seconds and should be left there unless you have a good reason to use anything else.

I use DVD Decrypter to copy vob-files to HDD, because the ripping with DVD2SVCD using "internal routines" is faster. I always used ripping this way and some of results was fine, so I think that this is not the problem.
I will try settings you recommend me. Besides, yesterday I downloaded the newest verson (1.1.2 built 1 if my memory serves me well), installed it and started conversion with settings, which the program automatically set up during installation (Offset=2, Overlap=2 and so on, only the sound I changed again to 128). 10 minutes ago I burned one of the three prepared cd-images and ... everything was playing absolutely perfect in my WinDVD. No freezing. Interesting. Maybe in the newest version has been improved some parts of DVD2SVCD, functions, I don´t know.
But I only be satisfied after I try at least next 4 or 5 conversions of various DVD´s and if every DVD will convert successfully, then I will kiss you all. :-)))) (It was a joke).
Thank you once again for advices.

Oh, I did not answer questions given by user hoozdapimp:
I did try to play prepared "subbed_muxed" mpeg files in my Win XP standart Media Player (do not remeber the number of version of my Media Player) - it plays well, Media Player does not only see the second audio stream and any of subtitles, the 16:9 videosreen is not viewed correctly (I mean the heigt and weiht of the video), but the mpeg file does not freeze during playback. I did not try powerDVD, I will.
Ripped vob files play ok too from my HDD. Except DVD2CVCD I tried other ways of video-audio conversion (using Virtual Dub and TMPeg) and those ripped vob-files which has been using with this programs always played fine.

Why is it that new posters always say that we are wrong about using external rippers. We don't say this to be exclusive we have real hard evidence and have had this for some time.
I will say this again we do not support or help when you do not rip with internal routines or Vstrip. Even if 6/10 times it works fine there are known and real issues with these rippers.
We have seen literally hundreds of problems solved by simply re-ripping with the included rippers. Does it always solve the problem? No it doesn't, but it does in some cases.

Sorry for that, I am sure you are one of the most experienced people with DVD2SVCD, but I did not say you are wrong. I respect your experiences and thank you for it. You and the user hoozdapimp have said the problem could be in the rip procedure. This is possible, of course.I only said that I do not think in my case the ripping procedure is a problem. Maybe I am wrong.
Probably the saffest way is to rip only with internal routines from original DVD, not to re-rip it from ripped vob-files from HDD. I did not try it only because of time. I will try.
As you have probably seen, I only work with one movie (Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s stone) and during about 10 conversions with different parameters in DVD2SVCD in the last 3 weeks I noticed: this film is to be coded to 3 CD´s (its lenght is 2:25:16). Sometimes the program creates me 3 images and sometimes 4 images - the fourth image is very small (4-5 MB). If 4 images are created I am sure that the conversion was not successfull and the result will freeze during playback. I tried to change: the size of CD (from "740" to "800"), than bitrate of the sound (from "128" to "160" or "192") and of course the bitrate of whole SVCD (from "Max.2530, Max.avg 2230" to for exampe "Max 2230, Max.avg 1930" and other). The behavior of the program was changed .. it did not give me message "Warning, the maximum bitrate is .... bigger the specified bitrate 2756-..", but conversion process was always without any error. Sometimes was the result of conversion the same (four images, the fourth very small)-and then freezing and sometimes 3 images-and then the playback was OK.
