how to reauthor black bars on 16:9 movie

Hi everyone, I have a 16:9 movie where the black bars on top and bottom have several purple streaks running across them, it's very distracting and I want to get rid of them (the streaks, not the bars). I used DVD2avi and cropped them away, but when I try to add the M2V to Maestro it gives me a Illegal resolution error. Does anyone know how I can reauthor the bars in the movie or turn them an even shade of black? if it's any help, the movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey, NTSC region 1. Thank you in advance for any help.

Haven't tried this kind of stuff myself yet, so I hope this helps.
