The fact is I watch movies on my monitor fullscreen or via a tv out which takes a portion (768x576) of my screen. These thin slither movies i download get stretched because i'd rather it was fullscreen or near to it.
For a 16:9 anamorphic dvd of reservoir dogs i just cropped with my avisynth file (and no resize.)
crop(16,80,688,416)
Is it so wrong to just do it this way? Should i follow the recommended resolutions that gordian knot gives ?
hope some1 can offer some advice.

generally if the dvd source is widescreen its probably best to encode it as such. if you want to make it look fullscreen you could use the pan scan option in the player bsplayer. widescreen ain't that bad anyway you get used to it.

Is there any benefit to not resizing in terms of the quality of the rip?
I've had problems with xvid undersizing but with this rip and no resizing it came out to the exact amount i specified. The majority of my rips will be 2cd with 5.1 sound so i think i can get away with a high resolution.
I guess letting the user decide on resizing when they play the movie is sensible though. I actually have a widescreen tv but i've not used a tv out that takes a 16:9 portion of the screen. Does one exist ?

don't know much about tv out. how come it doesn't take up the whole screen. if you've cropped away the black and are playing it with an aspect ratio of 16:9 i though it should work.
also if you're using 2 cds you probably can afford not to resize.
