View Full Version : Error Seeking

I have compressed a movie with xvid (Koepi's 17022003-1 and later with Nic's XVID - 16/02/03) and it plays fine if you are just playing it, but if you seek somewhere within the first 3 minutes 20 seconds it stalls. When I have it in an avi container (before audio is included) it takes a long time to seek. Like it has to go back a long way to find a keyframe, and when I put it into the ogg container (both with and without audio) it will freeze on the first viewable frame after the problem is done, and sit on that frame until the movie plays to that point.

I at first thought that it was a problem with TCMP, but it does it in WMP too. Then I tried other decoders and it does the same thing with the Divx 5.03 decoder, and Nic's Xvid decoder just skips it all together and starts playing right after problem.

When I open the video in VirtualDubMod, and seek into that area it prints "Warning: Nothing to output BFrame decoder lag" for just a second then it doesn't show it again, and the seeking is very slow (Like an avi without keyframes)

I am not sure what this problem could be but I am wondering if it isn't a xvid error now.

Thanks for the help,
TelemachusMH

While you have loaded it in Vdub, use the "jump to keyframe" buttons.
You'll have a big surprise ...

You are right that the first three minutes doesn't have a keyframe in it, but why did that happen when one should have been put it in every 250 frames at least. Is this a known bug? I haven't had this happen before. I also find it strange that it didn't do it during the credits, it correctly put the keyframes every 250 frames.

It's been reported so many times, I can't remember how often...

For me, it was only the first few minutes that weren't right, so I just reencoded them making sure that xvid was set with a lower max keyframe value. Then I cut off the beggining of my first video and appeneded it to the new beginning.

and what do you think the ideal i frame max is

TelemachusMH

I just tried several different ones like 75, 125, 150, 175, and used the one that worked and was about the right size. Just try serveral different ones and use the best one.

Problem is, the scene is VERY static. Camera dont move for one hour.... so bframes is very useful. I have to set MIN I-frame to big number, havent i?

And i have next question: I have video 352x256. I have read somewhere. If i have small resolution of video then i have to set low quantizer (I and P). What do you mean about it?

THANK U.

I don't quite understand what you are trying to say, but if you have a very static scene your MIN I-Frame value will not make much of a difference, it is the MAX that you are mostly dealing with.

The MIN I-Frame Values is the number of frames that must be inserted before the next I-Frame. The Default value is 1, which means that you can have two I-Frames next to each other. If the value is 10, it means that you will have an I-Frame followed by 9 (maybe more) B or P frames before an I-Frame is used. If your scene doesn't change much there isn't a real need for many I-Frames so lots of B and P frames are used before it hits the MAX I-Frame value.

The MAX I-Frame value is made for very static scenes. Sense the video doesn't change much, no I-Frames will be needed. So to help seeking and prevent errors from too many P/B frames, I-Frames are forcably inserted.

For what you are doing, the MIN I-Frame value probably doesn't mean anything. The MAX value is the one you want to change and if you are having seeking problems like I did, you will want it to be lowered.

*edit*
I think you may be confusing frame ranges like the MAX and MIN I-Frame values with quant values. High quants means that the video will be compressed more, then low quants. If you are making a backup of a very static movie, you probably don't need a small resolution like that.

This is another video - very fast scenechanges.
So I dont understand......:stupid:

I to have had this seek problem with bframes for some time now. "Its been metioned so many time now" ??? Maybe a keyword to search with would be helpful.

Compressiblity with them is just to hard not to use.

@Q-W-Y:
The solution to your problem is right here in this thread. If you read TelemachusMH explanation carefully, everything you need to know to solve your problem is there.
Unless of course you don't know what a K-Frame, P-Frame or B-Frame is.

In new video which i have done i havent got any seeking problem(because its high motion), BUT i dont uderstand why still VirtualDub show "Decoder Lag".

Is this only VD bug??

its nothing. It has to do with the decoder.Dont worry

I believe Decoder Lag message in Vdub has to do with the nature of B-Frames not beeing in chronological order. If you search the forum you will find a lot of information on that.
I also believe that the latest version of VDubMod won't probably show that warning...
