View Full Version : Wrong size after encoding...

I just made a perfect backup copy of a DVD I own (legal in my country :) )
I used Gknot and Divx 5.0.2.
My first problem was that the Divx froze in one particular frame, i solved that by disabling "Smooth playback" in my Divx decoder.
So I suppose there is nothing wrong with the rip, but a bug in the decoder?

Anyway, I set up Gknot to make a two CD rip, and I expected the final file to be 1400 mb, but it is only 1142 mb...

I read the guides and the picture quality is perfect, but the wrong size, so I guess it could have been even better?...
What have I done wrong, and how can I fix it??

And another question:
There are two commentary tracks on the DVD, and I would like to have them too in the file, is that possible?

Please help :)

Did you do a compression test? If so what % did you get?

AFAIK, you can't have more than 2 normal audio streams in an AVI. There are ways around it, like using microDVD or a dual channel mono MP3, but it's quite tricky and probably not worth the effort. I suggest you try OGGmux or the OGG output of VirtualDubMod.

Hei Sverige :)
Yes, did everything by the book, the compression test percentage was pretty high, but I don't remember now...
Final file:
Aspect: 768 x 336 (2.286 : 1)
Bitrate: 924 kb/s

So I will have to settle with only two embedded audio streams?
Guess I can rip the third one and keep separate :)

Just remembered: there is a slight bug in DivX5.0x so if the % is above 80 then you can more or less expect undersized files. Try using 1-pass qualitybased with q=2 and see what you get.

Thanks, I'll try that :)
But doesn't 2-pass give much better quality?

for the ... time: 1-pass quality based 100% = best quality

for the ... time: undersized = already reached max quality and can't get any bigger

for the ... time: don't ever ever go over DVD resolution! what the heck is that 768x of yours?! don't ever resize up! always resize down!
Max horizontal resolution is 720 if you don't have anything to crop, and something below if you have to crop (704 for example, or resize down to 640)

@hakko504

Is it legal to make backups in Sweden?

But thanks for pointing this out.

@N_F

AFAIK, yes, at least of things you own, and for personal use.
And earlier it has been legal to share copies with close friends and relatives, but the new EU recommendations may have changed that. I don't think there is a new law about it yet, but it may appear in the near future.

Ok, so what resolution should I go for?

640x272

So in fact, for some movies I will never reach the desired size, simply because they already are at max quality?

DJ Bobo

yes
but you can play on the audio side, increase your mp3 bitrate, or even put several ac3 streams to fill the space. Or put extras, etc

Good idea!
If I encode the extras separately, I can just add them to the main movie, and split the file afterwards right?

you can keep them separate, append them to the movie (not always possible), as you want, your choice ;)
