Split DVD to 2 discs FIXES. (Illegal navigation command, 'stopped', etc.). (Mini Guide)

Well, from what I've gone through, I figure this forum needs this. I'm probably going to 'DVD2One' most of my DVD's, but special ones I want to split with all menu's/special features, so I had to figure out how to do this. It's been kind of time consuming, and there's a lot to learn, so hopefully this mini guide will save others some grief.

This all applys to your basic movie. Some movies are more complicated, and I'll address those when I do one.

There are plenty of guides and instructions for doing the split to 2 discs, so please read those first, and then the following fixes will make more sense. This is just to help solve problems. Read the documentation on www.IfoEdit.com too (click 'About' in IfoEdit)

IfoEdit Stuff:

First off, when you hit "DVD Play" (which you should do EVERY time after you make any changes and BEFORE
you start burning, because if it doesn't play in IfoEdit, guess what? It won't in your player either)

......and you get a warning that says "No Valid DVD-Video volume could be found"...... (all this means is that there's no DVD in your DVD drive, which doesn't apply if you are editing files on your hard drive)

IGNORE IT........

and continue (now that one had me going for a day or so, cause I thought I'd fuc@ed up somehow). I learned this from some obscure post somewhere (THANKS, whoever you are). I think there should be some extra wording in there so people don't think they screwed up, or maybe it should go away permanently. But then again, I'm not that far along, so maybe it has a purpose down the line........

IfoEdit is a GREAT program, and does just what it's name says: It lets you edit (change) '.IFO' files, and .IFO files control how your
DVD disc plays. So after you make changes, you have to SAVE!....BUT, when it asks 'Do you want to save it as a .BUP as well?, cover your ass and say NO. That way if it screws up and you want to make sure you go back to where you were, you can just use the .BUP to re-create (copy, rename, etc.) your original IFO file, since the respective .IFO and .BUP files are identical. You can also just say yes to the save .BUP question, as long as you have the original files in another folder for recovering if you screw up.

You want IfoEdit to split the VOB/IFO/BUP files that belong to the MOVIE. This is the title set that has the most files and is the LARGEST in size. Usually it's VTS_01.VOB/IFO/BUP, but sometimes it's VTS_02 or some other VTS_xx. So, you have to find the biggest set (usually the one with the most .VOB's), and that's the one whose .IFO file (VTS_xx.0.IFO) you open in IfoEdit, and split into two discs. It's the .VOB files that actually get split, because that's where the movie is located.

So, the first thing you do is open the VIDEO_TS.IFO (this is the file you ALWAYS open when you're doing the DVDPlay test) that's in your 'source' directory, (the one that DeCrypter put them in). Then hit DVD Play, and click on the 'Play Movie' item of the screen. Let it play a few minutes into the movie, and then hit Exit. The little screen that then comes up shows you which VTS_xx files were played. Most of the time it's just one, i.e. VTS_01 (the main movie), but sometimes it's VTS_01 and some other VTS_xx's. In any case, whichever VTS_xx's are shown in the little screen, are the ones that need to be in disc 1. Otherwise, you'll get the 'illegal navigation' command. That's because it's trying to read something that isn't there! For example, if the little screen says the ones that played are VTS_01 (the movie) and VTS_02 (usually the movie company's logo). You'd split VTS_01 with IfoEdit, and then actually copy/move all the VTS_02 files to disc 1 after the split.

IfoEdit will open 2 directories (disc1 and disc2) where you tell it to, and put the split files there. Make sure that the directory/folder where you want the disc1 and disc2 folders is empty, since IfoEdit will say 'Failed to create directory' if you have disc1 or disc2 folders in there from previous splits.

IfoEdit will now split the .VOB files, create new .IFO/.BUP files for each disc, and also create separate 'VIDEO_TS.VOB/IFO/BUP' files on each disc.

When it's done splitting, close it.

The extra features, etc. are in the "other" VOB/IFO/BUP files. What this means is that after IfoEdit is done splitting, you have to actually COPY those other IFO/VOB/BUP files to whichever disc you want the extra features on. If you want to be able to go to special features from either disc, then you have to copy those files to BOTH discs. If you want just the second half of the movie on the second disc and the special features on the first disc, you only have to copy the "other" files to the first disc. And if you want just the first part of the movie on the first disc and the second part with the special features on the second disk, then you have to copy the other files to the second disc. Basically you have to copy whatever files IfoEdit didn't process to either just the first disc or the second disc, or both discs. This is simply all files (VTS_02_x.IFO/BUP/VOB, VTS_03_x.IFO/BUP/VOB, etc.) that are in the source directory, but not on disc 1 or 2.

Now IfoEdit will split at the 'layer' level of the disc by default. This will put most of the movie on the first disc, and give you room on the second disc for the special features/'other files'. If you want the 'other files' on the first/both discs, you'll have to split at an earlier chapter. One of the other guides has a calculation for determining where to split it so you can put the special features on either/both discs. Or you can just experiment. I've been lucky at finding a good split point so far (I'll shoot for a Chapter about 3/4 of the total number of chapters, if the special features are large, and I only want them on disk 2, for example). Remember that you only have 4.7 gigs on each disc (The limit is about 4.38 gigs in the folder you are going to burn, ...cause there's 2 ways of looking at a 'gig'...lol)

If you are short of disc space, you can MOVE (right click drag gives you that option) the 'other' files to disc 1 for example, and then after you get done burning it, you can MOVE them to disc 2 to burn that one(assuming you want them on both discs). Moving won't take up any more disc space, and doesn't take any time. Just keep track of what is in each folder.

After you copy the 'other' files, restart IfoEdit, open VIDEO_TS.IFO of the disc you copied the 'other' files to, and hit the 'Get VTS Sectors' button. This will synch the split files with the copied files and make them all work as one again. You have to do this for BOTH discs. IfoEdit will automatically save all the .IFO files, so you won't have to do a separate 'Save' if all you're doing is the VTS Sectors deal.

Now, I owe Josh (big time) for the solution to this second glitch.

'DVD Warning: An illegal navigation command was encountered.'

(There's an explanation on the IfoEdit Guide page now as well: http://www.ifoedit.com/ Go to 'guides'), that explains why this happens:

Here's the steps I had taken:

The first thing I did was OPEN the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, that was in the directory/folder that DVD DeCrypter put it in. (Our 'source' directory)

Then I hit DVD PLAY.

Everything was working fine, so I opened VTS_01_0.IFO (the .IFO for the movie), and did the 'split' function. (See the other guides for this)

Then I copied the 'other' files to disc1(this added the special features to disc 1), did the Get VTS Sectors, and hit DVD PLAY again. What I got was the FBI warning, then the logo, and instead of a menu coming up, I got the dreaded 'illegal navigation' warning.

I looked everywhere for a solution, and finally found a post by Josh buried somewhere.

I'm going to expand the process a bit and make it easier for newbies to do.

Remember that IfoEdit is an great editing program and don't be intimidated by these instructions.

1. Open the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in disc 1.

2. Click on the VMGM_MAT line in the TOP window (the second line from the top).

3. Either click on the +, or hit your right arrow, to expand that line.

4. Click on First Play PGC.

5. Scroll down in the BOTTOM window until you get to the line that starts with [000000f4]

6. Now we're going to edit that Pre Command., so 'right' click on that line.

7. Select 'Edit Command' .

8. In the window that pops up, choose (JUMPSS_VMGM) Jump to VideoManager Menu. (We're telling it to 'jump' to the main menu right after it loads.)

9. In the little window below, select 'Title Menu' (the only choice)

10. Click on OK, and you'll see that you've actually edited an IFO file! Pretty cool huh?

11. Now do what??????? SAVE it!......BUT when it asks 'Do you want to save it as a BUP' as well, say NO. (If something doesn't work, just use the .BUP file to go back to the original .IFO.

Now hit DVD Play again. You'll see that you've also bypassed the FBI warning and logo and gone straight to the menu. If everything works out, save it again and this time say YES to the .BUP question).

With the above procedure you can control what the disc does when it first loads in the player. For instance, in the second disc, you can change that same Pre Command to JUMP_TT (Jump to Title), and go right to the second half of the movie. You can do the same for the first disc.

Just make sure everything works by using the DVD Play button. You can use the control panel at the bottom to jump to different chapters, etc. I like to go to the last chapter and hit fast forward to see what happens when it gets to the end. It should go to the main menu if everything is working right.

The last glitch I just figured out is to NOT change the number of chapters in the second disc. Otherwise you won't be able to jump to the next chapter(s). For that matter, I don't change the number of chapters in the first disk anymore either.

Now on to burning...........................

I've burned 3 split discs so far. Used latest Nero 5.5.10.7b. Burning as a Data DVD worked(using HP DVD200E, DVD+R's, Apex AD-660 player), but there's some weird glitches. For instance it would just sit there burning really SLOWLY, but when I opened up some other program (to go online), it just took off........I'll share more when I know more......z

Everything looks good. Hopefully it will help some people learn how to split discs, it can be a little tricky to learn. And it can be difficult to explain it in easy terms for newbies. I also want to mention to always add the other files to both discs when you can. I personally try to get all of the other files on disc 2 when there's enough room, I came across 1 movie where it needed all of the other files for any of the bonus material to work. Some movies require those other files for the menu to work, and the movie to play correctly. Do you remove the 1 end sector on disc 1? That always should be done on disc 1. Oh, I just saw you do data dvd. If you remove 1 end sector off of disc 1 you can do the dvd-video option in Nero. If the data dvd works in you player that is cool. They wouldn't work in mine. Let us know if you find any other updates!

Thanks Josh. I was trying to provide a little 'foundation' to the process. I think it helps to understand a little about why we do the steps in the guides. I haven't subtracted 1 from the last end sector value in VTS_C_ADT (that's what we're talking about right?), because I compare the values in the source with disc1, and they've always been the same.....but then I haven't done any LONG movies yet either, so I'll keep checking. 'Data' burning has worked very well for me....I don't trust the 'Video' mode burning, but will keep experimenting and try to nail down what the problems are and why they happen.........z

Ok, I had a weird movie, where the original DVD immediately went to the Main Menu.

When hitting play movie, THAT's when the movie company logo/MPCC warning played BEFORE the actual movie started playing. (Knockaround Guys is the flick)

On disc1 after the split, the Illegal Navigation error occured, because there were 3 title sets in VTS_01 (the main movie). Due to the split, some of the stuff needed had gone to disc2 and was not available; namely the movie company logo/MPCC warning.

After messing with it for a few days, a simple solution came to me. Instead of clicking on Play Movie, I clicked on 'select a scene', picked scene 1, and end of problem!!!

This way, the menu is still active, for watching the movie with director comments for instance, which when clicked on immediately starts playing the movie.

See here for the full details of what the problem was:

This happened on the flick 'Below', after the split, and DVDPlay (disk 1) was clicked. Play just 'stopped'.

So, in trying to fix this, when the First Play PGC pre command on disk 1 was changed to Jump to the Video Manager Menu, OR to jump to Chapter 1, the computer would freeze up due to a tight loop that was created by changing the first pre command.

The solution is to change the LAST Pre command to:

JumpSS_VTSM (Jump to titleset menu)
Title Nr. 1, Title Set Nr. 1, Menu: root

Full details are here:

What this means (assuming you have already moved/copied the 'other' files to the respective disk), is that the Title menu VOB is missing. Since IfoEdit only splits the VOB's that belong the movie, this file must be 'moved' or copied from the source folder unto Disk1, and Disk2. Remember that 'moving' is instantaneous, and requires no additional disk space, whereas 'copying' takes time, and doubles the amount of disk space required by those files.

The title menu is in VTS_xx_0.VOB, where xx is the number of the main movie (usually 01, but NOT always). Remember that the movie is in the .VOB set that is the largest (say 4 or more files that are over 1,048,000,000 bytes) and has the most .VOB files in it.

So let's say our movie is in VTS_01_1.VOB thru VTS_01_7.VOB. IfoEdit splits this into say VTS_01_1.VOB thru VTS_01_4.VOB on disk 1 and then puts VTS_01_5.VOB thru VTS_01_7.VOB on disk2 (BUT renames them VTS_01_1.VOB thru VTS_01_3.VOB on disk 2).

Actually one of the .VOB's is usually split somewhere in the middle, and in our case VTS_01_4.VOB was split to where the first part is on disk 1 and the disk 2 starts with the second part.

SO, the actual Title Menu is in VTS_01_0.VOB and you have to copy that file to Disk1 and Disk2 (if you want to have a menu that is, and don't jump directly to Chapter 1 or something). Remember to do the VTS Sectors to synch everything up afterwards.

What this means is that VTS_01_x.IFO/BUP/VOB files are missing on the disk (1 or 2) that you are trying to play.

It will only happen if the flick is on a VTS set other than 01.

For example, your movie is in the VTS_04_x.VOB set. So after you split VTS_04_x.VOB, you have to copy all the VTS_01_x.IFO/BUP/VOB files to disk 1 and 2.

I've noticed that when I begin working with ripped files, I don't get the message above. Frequently, after stripping and making menu editing changes, I get it. This would indicate that your theory about what "this means" isn't correct, as in either case I'm working with files on the same hard drive.

The reason you're not getting the message is because you have probably left your original DVD disc in your DVD drive. If you have no actual DVD disks in ANY of your DVD/CD drives, you WILL get this message......z

I've been changing the first(or if necessary the LAST) pre-command to:

1.Pre Command (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts): 1, Title(ttn): 1, root-menu

With great success.

HOWEVER, I've noticed that while you are editing the pre-command, you can't just put in the numbers, i.e., 1,1, root. You HAVE to use the pulldown menu to put in the 1,1,root. If you don't, it will put 0's for the Titleset, Title, etc(and you'll get an illegal navigation). If you don't notice this you'll think that this command doesn't work...........

Cool. Does that play movie right away, or do the menu? If it does the menu, then we'll have to try that on some of the tougher movies like Shrek and see if it will play from choosing play on the menu instead of going to chapter selection.

I used one of the guides for doing this before and it worked great excpet the menu was messed up on one of the ones I tried, a MASH dvd. Now, when I try to resplit any of them, IFO Edit crashes before making the VIDEO_TS files. Could it be other software interfering? Any ideas?

Thanks

I've split a movie to two discs using IFOEdit a couple of times. I think I understand the process well enough. For some reason, I can't seem to figure out Minority Report.

After splitting, I copy the VTS_01_0.VOB file to both disc 1 and disc 2 folders. Then, I copy the rest of the VTS_02, VTS_03, VIDEO_TS, etc files to both folders. And yes, I click GET VTS SECTORS.

When I load I get a menu, but I can't select anything. Why do I lose menu functionality? I tried investigating the pre-commands, but there are 13 pre-commands. I'm not familiar enough to detect if the problem is there. How do I correct to get the menu working?

Another problem I had with this title is skipping the menu intro. I don't have the details in front of me, but you can't just set it to JUMP_TT and enter the title.

This movie is complicated. Help please?

So far, the only way around this, for some movies when the 'Play Movie' button on the main menu doesn't work is to go to 'Scene Selections' and start with chapter 1.

I'm still trying to find a fix for this, since editing the first OR last precommand just results in either a 'stopped' condition when you hit 'play movie', or an illegal navigation command when you hit DVD Play...

At least changing the LAST pre-command to JUMPSS_VTSM (Jump to Title Menu) (Title: 1, Titleset: 1, menu: root (make sure it actually changes to that when you edit it) gets you to the main menu in every flick I've done. If the Play movie button doesn't work, then I just start with Chapter 1.....

If anyone's go a solution for this one, I'd sure like to know...btw, the latest flick where this happens is 'Equilibrium'. It happens in 'Catch Me If You Can' also.

Btw, just as an experiment, I moved the last .VOB file of the movie out of the original folder, just to see what would happen. It played the FBI warning, a Preview of some movie, and then just stopped, before it could get to the main menu. When I moved the last file back again, everthing was normal. SO, it must go to the last .VOB file, and THEN go back to the beginning and show the main menu in some flicks.
If I could find where it goes to the end file, and change that to go to go to the menu, I think it would fix it....

I've had vg results with a number of discs with annoying menu intros using 2COOL's GUIDE (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43403), applied to vts_01_0.vob instead of to the main movie. Works great, and after a few tries gets quicker and easier. Main difference is that I have to scan each menu cell to find which cell the new entry point falls within, but that's not too difficult.

Yeah, that's good, IF you can get the Play button to work.....In this case, when you hit Play, everything just STOPS, and the status is 'stopped'.

ALSO, on disk 2 of this flick, if you just change the first pre command to go to Title 1, to resume the movie, you get the illegal navigation command. That's the first time I've had this happen.

Workaround is to change the last pre command to the JUMPSS VTSM, Title 1, Titleset 1, menu: root. Then when you get the menu, you have to click on chapter selection and pick chapter 1....it will start off at right chapter (whichever one disk 2 starts with) to finish the flick. At the end you'll again get the illegal navigation command, so you would have to reload the DVD to watch the special features.

Anybody know why it would get an Illegal Navigation on a hard jump to a title?????.....z
