Quality Vs Resolution: Fight!

Hi,

My DivX player on my TV stretches all movies to 640x480.

So my question is what will give me better quality do you think?

640xyyy Average Quant 4
or
512xyyy Average Quant 3

640 if you're playing it back at full screen. 512 is just way too low IMO. An average quanitzer of 4 isn't horrible, and you'll lose details anyways on the TV. Maybe try going for another CD and getting 'wonderful quality' instead of 'okay quality'.

Definitely 512x... because of the higher quantizer. For me it can't be high enough! the higher the better ;)

You've gotta be kidding. You've gotta beat me if you care 2 minutes after you begin watching (remember the VHS days ;))

Comparing to the DVD is always the wrong way! because you'll never reach DVD level, even with quantizer 2 and highest resolution.
My motto: as less artifacts as possible!

DJ Bobo, again I would incline to agree with you. Just wanted to hear what other people thought.

After encoding 512yyy minority report (which compresses badly) I have to say it looks pretty good.

I'd go for 512 also. For TV viewing that's high enough. The extra detail you get from using a 640 res probably won't even be visible on a TV, but the extra blocks would be.

Display on a monitor on the other hand is a completely different story.

i can see macroblock much easier on my tv because it has far greater contrast/color than a monitor. So i would also go for the 512 resolution.
