Ok I have my movies onto my computer. My roomate is plugged into the router so I shared my movies folder. However when he is watching them my whole computer seems to lag down. Any ideas why? I have a dual 2100+ with a gig of ram. Why is it lagging out the computer to send him something at around 10mb a min. I mean that shouldn't be using up my comp should it?

Are there any other devices on the network or are your systems downloading from other systems.

nothing else is on it. I bought a router and each of us are plugged into it. That's all.

The only thing that comes to mind then is to check for fragmentation.

Do you have DMA for your hard-disk turned on?

Ive got an alternative way of getting this working right it worked for me!!

Are u sharing this folder by Windows Share ie right click on folder sharing etc

If yes then its windows! every version of windows ive ever tried
does this if one is copying files off another at 550k/sec or more over windows share

Id reccomend set up a mini HTTP server or FTP server for you and your mate NOT hard to do at all. HTTP ones u can get free too

that way u can use the full 10/100mbit connection between you at only 1-5% processor

Thats what ive done we are on a router 5 of us sharing a broadband cable connection and this is the only way my p3 850 can handle the network traffic without using 100% processor just on windows share
(it uses about 5% on mine with FTP at 800K/sec to my friend)

Yes I am on a network using windows. And it shouldn't be fragmentation because My computer defragments every night. I'll try the ftp. i was just hoping to not have to do that. There might be some settings that I can change in windows to work with that.

also what's DMA for the harddisk? What does it do and how do I check to see it's setting?

basically DMA in non technical terms greatly by an order of magnitude speeds up your Hard disk

Its unlikely u had it off as general usage of the computer would have been slow as well

to check simply go to device manager in system /control panel and go to IDE controllers then primary IDE channel and it should say there if you have 2k or XP if it is not set to DMA itll say PIO

but again unlikely if this is only a problem when u are using the network and not general usage of computer as well

hrmmmm it was set to DMA. Is there possibly an update available that could make it run better? I'm looking for drivers now.

Instead of an FTP you could set up apache and allow it to list directories. You could even set it up to utilise Video Lan Clients IIRC. It's not so good if you want access control. But if you just want to shar your files it is quick and easy and can be done easy from a web browser.

As far as it being Windows that is at fault though. I am not so sure about that. I have had all sorts of computers on my network running all sorts of OS. And playing files off SMB shares has never been a problem for me.

PS Apache is a web server btw

And maybe its not windows but it is true what i said in my experiences. But yeah apache would be easier quicker etc to set up than an FTP if all you want to do is share files to your friend who is connected to u
