View Full Version : Artefacts sounds in mp3 files encoded with lame!!!

Hi!

I have a problem with files encoded with LAME. Whatever I encode a CBR, ABR or VBR mp3, I get artefacts sounds in the mp3 when I play it with some players. Sounds look like a morse code, how funny but how boring!!! Oddly with WMP9 and WinAMP, it's ok, quite good. But if I want to listen it with BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer or MicroDVD, some weirds sounds appears and I don't know why.

Also for my personal use I sometimes need to let the audio outside the video. With BSplayer, you can easily load the video and load the audio. The odd sounds are here and it's quite annoying. BUT if I mux the video and the audio, EVERYTHING is gone. No weirds sounds anymore. It's ONLY when I listen the audio (mp3) alone on some kinds of players.

I've tried many options but nothings change. I've just discovered that IF I encode a wav into alt-preset 96Kbits and let LAME downsample it to 32Khz, ALL my MP3 files (CBR, ABR or VBR) are ok. Unfortunately it works only with 96Kbits. I've tried to encoded a mp3 at alt-preset 128K and downsample it to 32Khz (--resample 32), I got weirds sounds.

It's the first time I discover the problem because usually I mux the audio and the video.

Oh and by the way my sound card is an audigy player. I've never experienced any problems. I'm under XP, 1800+ and drivers are ok.

I suspect I'm doing a bad thing but which one? Here's an example of what i'm doing with Lame options:

lame -b 96 -m j -h --resample 48 -q 0 input.wav ouput.mp3 --> bad sounds
lame -p --alt-preset cbr 96 input.wav ouput.mp3 --> ok (Lame downsample to 32Khz)
lame -p --alt-preset cbr 128 input.wav ouput.mp3 --> bad
lame -b 128 -m j -h -q 0 input.wav ouput.mp3 --> bad
lame -b 128 input.wav ouput.mp3 --> bad

Last but not least: all the MP3 I have from differents sources on the net sound ok with BSPlayer or any other players. It's only MY created MP3 files that have a problem. And I asked some friends to play my MP3 on their machines and they got the same artefacts sounds.

My question is: what am I doing wrong? Si there an option to add in LAME to get rid of this problem? Or is it a bug?

If not, is there another good encoder than LAME? Well ALL MP3 I got on the net are ok, I would like to be able to produce same.

Mayny many thanks to any info. :)

First you must ensure that the problrm is in the mp3 file. From your description it seems to me that the mp3 is fine, but the problem is with the playback only. Try to decode the mp3 back to wave (with Lame) and listen to decoded wav. (Or open it with audio editor). If the wav is ok, then nothing is wrong with Lame and mp3. In this case search the problem in the drivers and software.

Hi.

Thanks for suggestion. I then decode my mp3 back to a new wav (--decode) and the wav is playing fine with BSPlayer where the mp3 gets slightly corrupted.

I wonder. MP3 sounds ok with the main players (Windows Media Player, WinAMP) but not on specific ones mainly targeted to video (BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer, etc...).

And some friends that have differents machines, OS, etc... experience the same problems with the same programs.

I should maybe ask the question in MP3 newsgroups to know how they create their MP3 files.

Obviously the problem is not in the mp3. Lame works fine with all settings, no need to ask elsewhere (you may, if you want). The problem is somewhere in your system, but I can't guess what exactly. I sugest using WinAmp for mp3 playback (2.81 preferred), it is best for that.
