Cutting a movie up by chapters?

Well first off, I apologize in advance if this question is horribly redundant and/or is in the wrong forum, but I've been trying to find stuff without much success in the 5 days that I've been waiting (terribly long wait just to post something by the way)

Anyways...

Could someone tell me if there's a program that can take the chapter info of a movie, chop it up, then let me piece it back together (plus any additional cuts that might be neccessary) without losing anything quality-wise? I'd love to make a chronological version out of Memento for my personal viewing (naturally), but I'm a complete greenhorn to all this and have no clue where to start.

Uh-oh. Let me get this straight, you want one program that does this all for you? Re-arrange the chapters, encode etc.?

BTW, have you checked your Memento DVD for the eastereggs. For example, mine has (at least one) where you can watch the movie chronologically.

Well actually all I was wondering is what programs I'd need to cut the .vobs up, and it'd make my life a hell of a lot simpler if I could use the chapter information as a start.

Oh and as far as the DVD goes I'd like to make a version with the better picture quality and 5.1 sound, the one that comes on the other disc sucks :p

short answer:
a dvd ripper that can split on chapters, dvd2avi, avisynth, and virtualdub

probably longer than it has to be answer :):
smartripper allows you to rip individual chapters. It would be tedious, but you could rip each chapter one by one to individual vobs, or using stream processing rip to separate m2v and ac3 files.
I'm sure other rippers have similar functionality, and one of them is bound to be easier than the smartripper method of 'deselect all chapters, select one, rip it, deselect it, select next, rip it...'

anyway, since you are wanting to split at chapter points which already exist in the dvd, it would be best to do this during the rip to HD process. Do a search in the Decrypting forum for more infos.

from there, you could just make a bunch of d2vs in dvd2avi, then make a bunch of avs files, and put them together in the order you want in your favorite flavor of virtual dub.
or you could even make one avs file that puts all the pices in order.

I'm sure other rippers have similar functionality, and one of them is bound to be easier than the smartripper method of 'deselect all chapters, select one, rip it, deselect it, select next, rip it...'Actually it's very easy with Smartripper. Go to settings, then in the middle column that's called "File - Splitting" select "every chapter". Now select the stream you want to rip and it will output one vob for every chapter.
Use DVD2AVI to concatenate these vobs into one .d2v file the way you want them and encode as any other movie.
