First of all, I've been searching these forums during my "waiting period", and haven't found anything. So either help me, or point me to something I missed. Please don't flame me to a crisp. :D

OK, here's my setup:

Athlon XP 2100+
512 MB DDR
Windows XP Pro

Latest builds of:

DVD Decrypter
VirtualDubMod
Koepi's XviD

I'm pretty comfortable with XviD encoding in general, having encoded several game movies I've captured using Fraps. Well, I decided to move up a notch and try ripping something from a DVD and encoding it. My test piece is the Two Towers preview off of the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition set (Disc 2, Title 2, Chapter 1, I believe). Ripping with DVD Decrypter was pretty straightforward, and the resulting VOB played fine in BSPlayer.

I open up the VOB in VirtualDubMod. Set aspect ratio to 'free' and use the original resolution. Rip audio to AC3. OK, seems to load fine. Then I try a two-pass XviD encode. The only settings I've changed from the defaults is quants (I've tried both H.263 and New Modulated HQ) and GMC/QPel/Chroma ME, both on and off. I've also tried Fast Recompress and Full Processing.

My problem is that no matter what, my encodes _always_ stop ~20 seconds into the movie, and then start up again a little later.

I don't think it's VDubMod's VOB parsing routines, because I tried opening the VOB through VFAPI, and it did the same thing. I also tried using AVI Synth, but it was encoding at, like, 10 seconds per frame. :P

Any ideas?

EDIT: OK, just read the bug reporting thread. It also does this when I try encoding a clip from the LotR:FotR National Geographic disc.

For decoderonly tried Nic's, I have only tried playing it in BSPlayer. :scared: I'll try Windows Media Player & MPClassic, and using Koepi's decoder this evening.

I don't get it! do you mean that when you seek (going forward or backward) in bsplayer the movie freez for ~x sec and then it start running ok, (OR) while its playing it freezes few secs and replay?

When playing the video, it just sometimes stops for a bit.

I have done some testing, and I think it is a player issue. BSPlayer always has the problem. Windows Media Player 9 has the problem, but if I hit stop and then play again, without closing WMP, it works fine. Media Player Classic plays it correctly, most of the time, but sometimes it still glitches.

This is with both Koepi's dshow decoder, and Nic's. 2-pass encode with pure default options.

This video contains 3 dropped frames. The reason is a bug which has just been found - mostly because of you. Thanks for that!

Well, glad I could help!

Will this be fixed in Koepi's next XviD build?
