View Full Version : what decoder in your opinion handles xvid files best?

Well the choices are :
The decoder that comes with koepi build, the one from nic, ffdshow, and also Divx5 decoder.
For what is the divx decoder I ask this question also because once a file burned on cd the fourCC can not be changed! The new DVD palyers that can handle divx and also Xbox etc would play the files if the fourCC is set to divx. So what do you think about this? Do you think Divx encoding Xvid would not be as good as Xvid decoder ?

I think the 3ivx decoder looks really good.
what's best? can't say. but this is what I like and use.

Nic's latest xvid.ax works best and flawlessly for me. I tried with 3ivx decoder, but it messed all of my own encodings I had made with Koepis builds. I didn't never actually got it what was it. If I remember right it was b-frames.

And what if the question is asked this way:
Dose using divx decoder have any kind of disadvantage for and xvid file playback?
Ofcours only reason for asking this question is the possibility of xvid playback with non pc players.

Do you mean the Divx 5.0 decoder?

Call me old fashioned, but I decode, with what I encode with.
Keeps my quality straight:sly:

I use the decoder that comes with Koepi's alpha builds. It's the only one I've found able to decode XviD with all the unstable dev features enabled without problems.

Nice question. I use FFDshow. Great tool.
Anyway: How about starting a poll? Wouldn´t that be better than a thread with 1 million posts in it?

I use ffdshow because it's the simplest way. If the quality is better or worse than for instance XviD decoder I have no idea...

ffdshow for it's endless postprocessing options.
When is a new build coming out? It's been almost two months.
Great tool, though.

hmmm,
not even 1 person says that divx5 decoder would be no problem!
Wierd thing is that if I change fourcc of an xvid file to play with divx5 decoder there is no significant change and difference!
It simply adds the advantage of the file being able to be played on an external non pc machine that can handle divx playback!

That is because the DivX 5 decoder can't decode an XviD video encoded with Modulated/Modulated HQ setting. Or has this somehow changed in recent times? (I know of no one that has tested it lately).

DivX 5 cant decode Xvid that contains mpeg quantization correctly.
When we are planning to make the XviD encode to be playable using
DX50 .. be sure to use only h263 quant (no gmc, no q-pel).
I have visited divx website to check what resolution is supported by
DivX 5 decoder ... it says "anything divisible by 4" . However i tried making Xvid encodes 640x476 (mod 4) and 640x360 (mod 8) and DivX 5 cant decode it correctly. It produces artifacts that looks like those we see when mpeg quant in XviD is decoded by DivX 5 decoder. Resolution with mod 16 are fine though. Those are the limitation that i know when making XviD encodes for DivX 5 playback.

I prefer to use latest Nic's XviD DSF. :)

I noticed that the latest nic's decoder makes a better and clearer image. But I always use ffdshow beacuse of my low cpu and its functions

is there a way to get the same quality as Nic's decoder in vdub ? maybe using certain build ?

Well actualy I did some testing with different files (xvid) changing the fourCC to Divx, so they were decoded with Divx5 Decoder.
To be honest my eyes could not make differents between the quality!
But strange is that (Only in full Black) i could see some rare and very little green dots when movie was decoded with Xvid decoder, but when fourcc changed to divx5 those were all gone!
The files I tested were done using:
B-frames, VHQ, chroma motion, H263.
But I also did a fast check with a file captured with modulated quantizer and it also seemed to worked fine!

modulated quantizer encoded material has both h263 and mpeg quant. AFAIK, mpeg quant frame tends to produce artifacts in divx5 decoder.
All my encodes using mpeg quant produces artifacts in divx5. This is a known issue with divx5 .. :(

Ive downloaded the xvid codec from a moviecodec site couple of times but it keeps corrupting. Miguel over there has told me of a place to get an updated version of the xvid codec coz mine was corrupted and out of date!
But I was just wondering which one u all use which is ready to play films? (coz i cant do all that compiling stuff).
Im looking for a decent version with no ad/spyware which is stable and doesnt corrupt all the time.
Anyone else has problems with the xvid codec available on this site or is it just me? It seems to go all corrupt when im watching signs.
Cheers

I had many problems decoding developer build content. The problems were revolving. Different movies would crash the media players, present corrupt b-frames, smearing etc. The confusing thing is that it would be different movies each time that caused the problem. With no changes in software, what worked one day wouldn't the next and what appeared corrupt worked the next day. Sometimes the comp hadn't even been turned off.
Since installing a new cpu and clean instal of the os, using ffdshow with nic's latest decoder, ALL files work consistently.

I always use ffdshow due to the many postprocessing options. It works perfect with all fancy options except "Packed Biststream". It seems to mess frames order, but that sames happens with DIVX decoder.
About latest NIC DSF I have a strange problem. It shows a completely black screen when any of the postprocessing boxes is checked in (also if brightness scroll is not centered). This happens only when postprocessing is on, before opening the movie. Does this happen to anybody else?

I use Nics' xvid.ax decoder it is by far the best picture quality and bframe decoder at this point. With the progress of xvid and the filters in avisynth there is really no need to tweak the final product, in fact deblocking is starting to become redundant.
@ Nish have you try to install xvid from Nics' page?

Not yet mate, weighing up nics with koepis and considering uninstalling all my codecs and checking out that nimo pack,- lots of people rave bout that one.

I'd stay clear of codec packs, nimo has caused many a-computer to suffer.
Here's my views on the matter:
It's hard to tell the quality difference between ffdshow/nics. It may be possible that nic's suffers less from the Q-Pel smearing effect, but I've seen it happen on some encodes nontheless (might be part of the encode, who knows).
FFDShow has faster/better seeking. With ffdshow you seek and then it pauses and starts playing when it's there, with nic's it seeks, gets to a keyframe and then decodes to the screen very quickly until it catches up with the audio and then returns to sync.
The video blits surely slow down the time it gets to the resync point... I prefer ffdshow on that merit (perhaps nic can fix this?)

cheers for that blight, was V close to installing nimo. Im actually gonna try Nics xvid codec out, he seems to constantly be adding to it which is a good sign, and cant find that keopi one anywhere anyway!

I don't think Keopi makes a decoder, only an encoder.

yup yup .. everybody should stay away from codec pack ... they cause problem alot in my experience...
