View Full Version : members and mods with short fuses

Reading and searching for answers (I don't dare to put a Q here)I do notice some mods and members with very short fuses.
If people make mistakes, say like "not searching" or "posting in the wrong forum" they are immediately barked at.
For example: Koepi, however skilled a programmer and mod, seems sometimes offended when people are asking questions about transcoding from MPEG4 Xvid to MPEG1 VCD or MPEG2 SVCD.
Some other members are always prepared to give answers like:
"Wrong thread or wrong forum"
"You don't belong here"
"Newbie!"
Instead of
"look at this or thus thread"
"here's my solution"
"Look at this faq or that guide"
My point is, that this (very good forum) is for helping people (and sometimes people make mistakes,it's not always stupidness or laziness)out, and not about showing how important you are here and what a veteran you are.
I you are very important and busy and annoyed by someones post why stop being busy and take some of your precious time to flame anyway, if your time is so precious, it's only a little bandwidth someone spilled with his post?

do the members/mods you mention actually have a short fuse, or is it the fact that they probably had come across 5 of the same post of which was answered by copying their error message into the search?
i think that is possibly the main cause, rather than short fuses.

Some mods are more patient, others are less. But they all do a very good job here (may I exclude myself here as I don't want to sound proud of myself :) ).
This site is successful because we have a good team, and forum rules. Simply obey them, and there's no reason for being afraid of asking a question.
If you get a rough answer without being "guilty", don't take that for granted. The majority of those who get an unfriendly answer have deserved it, but errors happen. If you look at forums where rules are not being enforced as strictly as here, you'll find that they are often bloated with useless posts, bad language, and you don't get the information you need.

Depending on whom you're talking about it's more like 500 - 5000. Trust me on this: Everyone has his/her limits but I don't think anybody means to be self-important or rude (in fact, if I did think that the moderator in question would have to answer to me), but after being confronted with the same question over and over again eventually you start implementing rules by the letter.. and rule1 says read up and search the forum before asking.

As we are on "searching"...

I think it's not right to open a thread with naming moderators "who are not doing it right". It would be better if you would have wrote a nice PM to Doom9 and then he would, probably, reply the same things that have been said hundreds of times (in this thread and in the above linked also)...
And another thing the moderators have to abide two set of rules, the normal rules AND the rules for moderators. So, I would not say a word if I get shout at when I'm too lazy to search/post in the right place etc.
For example (inspired by Knallbert on UB):
Newbie A:
Comes to the board. Reads the rules, makes a search and THEN posts in the *gasp* right forum. He writes the problem (of course, he first tried to solved it by himself) in a logical manner with many info. He uses a spellchecker and thanks the kind people who are helping him for free.
Newbie B:
Comes to the board. Don't read the rulse, doesn't even know what "guides" and "search" means and post in the first forum he comes across. He writes in a strange manner ("ive downloadedtizu kewl movie.can i convert it to divx to watchi it on myTVA?!" with almost no info... After 3 mins. he looses his temper and shouts "why iz no one helping me!!". Not to mention that he really looses it when someone points him to the guides, the search engine etc.
If you're a newbie type A, you can be almost 100% sure that NO moderator (not myself, not Koepi, not anyone!) will bash you. If you're type B then be lucky to have a mummy wich can cook and clean up after you...
Not to mention that more and more people have this "I demand/deserve help!" mentality.
Umm. Sigh, who cares anyway. I'm glad that there are so nice and helpfull/knowledgeable members like wmansir who are really one of the main reasons why I'm still a moderator on this fabolous board.
Cheers,
Mijo.

Personally I think some mods are too lax enforcing rules. Regardless I say let the mods (utimately doom9 though) dictate how this wish to enforce the rules. Users will never know unless they read a few forums 5 or 6 times daily and start answering tons of questions. After a couple of months of that, then and only then will they have a valid perspective based insight as to the recurrence of the same old questions and the reasoning behind the various forum rules.
When a user is warned it's up to them if they take it personally or not. If I got striked I'd lay low for a bit and be a tad more cautious and re-read the forum rules. If they take a strike as a provocation then that's their own self-defeat. Has anyone ever gotten a strike that's actually donated to doom9.org? I highly doubt it.
edit: One more tidbit I'd like to add.
Who is insulting who?
If a user posts a question that has been answered in FAQs, Q&As, guides, etc. and gets reprimanded then is the moderator insulting a user for posting the question?
Or is the user posting the question insulting all users on the forum for wasting their time reading the same old stuff again and again. Wasting mods time. Insulting people who spending time writing up the Q&A, FAQs, etc.

I remember when this forum was ezBoard and there were something like half a dozen sections. Now.. however many years its been later, I am simply amazed at the commendable job both Doom9 himself (in scaling the forums, adding staff, etc.) and the mods have done (day to day management) up to this point.
This place has had around a 1000% growth in its years... and now is capacity-wise, one of the largest online communities around, and its definitely one of the best managed communities around.
I also second what the honorable mr.bass had to say.
Thanks for all the great years Doom9, hopefully many more to come.

Most reactions, and please let me make very clear that I do appreciate them, do suppose in one way or another that I do have any comments on the great work being done here.
I don't.
I just wanted (and still am) making a remark about the tone being used by some members (not only mods). That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
About:
"....I think it's not right to open a thread with naming moderators "who are not doing it right". It would be better if you would have wrote a nice PM to Doom9 and then he would, probably, reply the same things that have been said hundreds of times (in this thread and in the above linked also)... "
I was not mentioning mods "not doing things right", I just used one mod as an example to illustrate my point.
Furthermore, I think it's proper in a forum like this (GD) to bring any non specific technical issue under discussion, wether I am right or wrong (that's what a discussion is for).
cheers,

Then you could've posted the very same thing without mentioning names. If you wouldn't mentioned any names I would not bring this up... I think we all would know what you mean as this was discussed several times, like I wrote. :)
The thoughts from my first posting in this thread still apply. Not to mention all the other good points.
I really don't have anything against any discussion nor your opinion. You have wrote your thoughts in a nice manner and not insulted anyone, IMO. So thanks for that and for clearing your standpoint up.
Again, if you are polite, respect the netiquette even if you miss some forum rule no one will skin you alive. Those people who are not polite, demanding, rude etc. will, in many cases, get a harsh reply, wich they, IMO, don't even deserve (they don't even deserve the time for writing a harsh reply).
Ok, enough my myself. Thanks for this nice discussion and all the best,
Mijo.

think i will join in on this.
what people have to also realise and not confuse is that not all replies are what some people may think. in other words don't confuse short to the point answers with being angry.
useing Koepi as an example(since i don't THINK he will skin me alive :) ), yes he does tend to say things plainly, yes he does some times throw in some sarcasm. this does not mean he has to be angry at the time or that he is having a go at someone.
i know i have been accused of the same things myself (and yes people saying they are "l33t" does piss me off as it is childish drivel) but people who say it don't know me or the way i tend to reply to questions.
i have to also say that i have found users tend to be much ruder and arrogant than mods. look at how some people swear and put people down and expect answers now (goddamnit) as if there was some special obligation the mods and others owed them.
so remember that people like mods are actually doing you a service and make the effort to find out information first so you can ask constructive questions and if an answer seems blunt then don't take it as a personal insult to you. reread it and consider what was actually said. if you really think there is a problem with someone then PM one of the mods about it.
p.s. don't everyone start posting they are "l33t" either as that will just show how childish they really are.
